How Lockheed Martin Can Take Advantage Of A Defense Renaissance

Germany To Buy Dozens Of US F-35s To Replace Bombers, Citing Putin''s War In Ukraine The Russian war in Ukraine has very belatedly sent one lead NATO country into a defense spending spree. Before the Feb.24 invasion, Germany wouldn''t so much as let its weapons be transferred to Kiev via allies - wanting to present a sense of neutrality with Moscow - but now with all prior reluctance apparently abandoned, Berlin is poised to rapidly beef up its advanced fighter jet capability: " Germany plans to buy up to 35 US-made F-35 fighter jets and 15 Eurofighter jets , a parliamentary source said Monday, as part of a major push to modernize the armed forces in response to Russia''s invasion of Ukraine," Bloomberg reports Monday. The Lockheed-produced jets look to be acquired in the "dozens" - taking up a big chunk of Germany''s proposed defense budget which will be north of 50 billion euros this year, acknowledged as a "record high" . This as Germany has agreed to boost defense spending above 2% of gross domestic product - something which NATO had previously been frequently lectured on by Trump.

Germany to buy U.S.-made F-35s to replace ageing bombers
02:50pm, Monday, 14'th Mar 2022 AOL
BERLIN (AP) — Germany said Monday that it will replace some of its ageing Tornado bomber jets with U.S.-made F-35A Lightning II aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Announcing the decision, Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht said Germany also will upgrade its Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets for electronic warfare — a capability that''s also currently fulfilled by the Tornado jets. The Eurofighter will be replaced from 2040 with the Future Combat Air System, or FCAS, that''s being jointly developed with France and Spain, she said. Germany''s air force commander, Ingo Gerhartz, said the current war in Ukraine made it necessary to choose Lockheed Martin''s F-35s. Previously, the government had considered replacing the Luftwaffe''s Tornados with a mix of different U.S. and European-made aircraft. “There can be only one answer to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin''s aggression,” said Gerhartz. “Unity in NATO and a credible deterrent. This in particular means there is no alternative but to choose the F-35.” The German military does not have nuclear weapons of its own, but as part of the system of nuclear deterrence developed during the Cold War it maintained bombers capable of carrying U.S. atomic bombs, some of which are stationed in Germany.

Germany decides in principle to buy F-35 fighter jet
06:49am, Monday, 14'th Mar 2022 Business Recorder
BERLIN: Germany has decided in principle to purchase the US fighter jet F-35 built by Lockheed Martin to replace its ageing Tornado, according to two government sources. A German defence source told Reuters in early February that Germany was leaning toward purchasing the F-35 but a final decision had not been taken. The Tornado is the only German jet capable of carrying US nuclear bombs, stored in Germany, in case of a conflict. But the air force has been flying the jet since the 1980s, and Berlin is planning to phase it out between 2025 and 2030. It was not clear how many F-35 jets Germany may attempt to purchase. Germany eyes Lockheed F-35 fighter jet; no final decision The F-35 buy will be a blow for Boeing, whose F-18 was favoured by former German defence minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer to replace the Tornado. The decision to go with a US fighter jet could also upset France. Paris has been warily watching past German deliberations over whether to settle on the F-18 or the F-35, concerned it could undermine the development of a joint Franco-German fighter jet that is supposed to be ready in the 2040s.
