Highlights Crypto-currency trading platform Coinbase has blocked 25,000 wallet addresses linked to Russian accounts. Bitcoin is holding at just around US$38,200 for the second day in a row, remaining 12 percent below its price just one week earlier. XIDO had been hovering between six and seven dollars throughout most of February before a dramatic turnaround on March 3 where it shot to US$34. Crypto-currency trading platform Coinbase has blocked 25,000 wallet addresses linked to Russian accounts. The popular platform said the addresses were related to Russian individuals or entities, who it believes have engaged in illicit activity. The action taken by Coinbase were made over fears that the accounts could be used to skirt economic sanctions put on Russia in the wake of their invasion of Ukraine late last week. Coinbase''s chief legal officer, Paul Grewal explained the exchange’s move means the sanctioned individuals will no longer be able to access their accounts and that the block will also identify accounts indirectly linked to banned users.

List of big companies exiting Russia gets longer

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to disrupt global markets markets, more big companies are frowning on Russia’s show of power and are taking action to show solidarity with Ukraine by exiting the world’s largest country one after the other across different sectors. About two weeks after the invasion started, at least 40 companies have left Russia or stopped the sale of their products and services in the county in no particular order. Manufacturing Car and truck makers such as General Motors Company, Ford Motor Company, Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corporation, Harley-Davidson, Mercedes Benz, and Volkswagen, announced they would halt shipments to Russia or shut down assembling plants in the country. Volvo and Daimler Truck Holding AG also suspended business activities in the country. “We clearly stand for peaceful global cooperation and categorically reject any form of military force; we have decided to suspend our business activities in Russia with immediate effect until further notice,” Daimler tweeted via its official handle.

Visa, Mastercard Hike Merchant Fees For First Time In 2 Years Just days after cutting off customers in Russia, credit card giants Visa and Mastercard are raising the rates they charge merchants for using their service after suspending price hikes for the last two years because of the pandemic. While paid up-front by businesses, these fees are typically passed along to consumers in the form of higher prices. The fee hikes are expected to kick in next month, according to WSJ''s anonymous sources. So-called "interchange fees" that account for most of the increase are charged when customers use their cards at a merchant''s business. Though shoppers remain mostly ignorant of their existence, these fees are a "constant source of aggravation" for merchants. US merchants paid Visa and Matercard an estimated $55.4 billion in credit-card interchange fees in 2021, more than 2x the amount in 2012, according to the Nilson Report. Merchants pass along at least some of these costs to the consumer in the form of higher prices.
