US, Russia Go Toe-to-Toe in Information War Over Ukraine

11:02am, Sunday, 20'th Feb 2022 Voice of America News
Has U.S. President Joe Biden been boxing in his Russian counterpart, making it awkward for Vladimir Putin to order a shock and awe" invasion of Ukraine? The Biden administrations tactic of publicly disclosing real-time intelligence has raised the eyebrows of some spies, who favor more reticence, but it is drawing praise from information-war specialists and Western diplomats. Michael McFaul, a former U.S. ambassador to Moscow, said on Twitter that he thinks the administration may have surprised the Kremlin with how it has competed in an information war that is shaping public perceptions and, possibly, decision-making and even real war planning. After Biden told reporters in Washington that he is now convinced Putin has chosen to invade Ukraine, including striking at Kyiv, McFaul and other former and current diplomats speculated about whether Biden was carefully hemming in his Russian adversary. Biden has given Putin a brilliant off-ramp, McFaul tweeted. By announcing to the world that Putin plans to invade, Putin can now embarrass Biden by not invading and blaming the West for beating the drums of war. Take it Mr.
DONETSK: Russias strategic nuclear forces held exercises overseen by President Vladimir Putin on Saturday as Washington accused Russian troops massed near Ukraines border of moving forward and being poised to strike. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, said that his country was a shield against Russia and deserved more support in the face of a feared Russian invasion. In a speech at a security conference in Munich, Zelensky condemned a policy of appeasement towards Moscow. For eight years, Ukraine has been holding back one of the greatest armies in the world, said Zelensky, who travelled to Munich despite shelling in his countrys conflict-torn east, that left two Ukrainian soldiers dead. He demanded clear, feasible timeframes for Ukraine to join the US-led Nato military alliance a prospect that Moscow has said would be a red line for its security. But he said he was willing to meet Vladimir Putin to find out what the Russian president wants. The US was quite unequivocal in its assessment as Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said that Russian forces were beginning to uncoil and move closer to the border. We hope he (Putin) steps back from the brink of conflict, Austin told a news conference in Lithuania, saying an invasion of Ukraine was not inevitable.
DONETSK, Ukraine/MOSCOW: Russias strategic nuclear forces held exercises overseen by President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, and Washington accused Russian troops massed near Ukraines border of moving forward and being poised to strike. With Western fears of war rising, foreign ministers from the G7 group of rich nations said they had seen no evidence that Russia is reducing military activity near Ukraines borders and remained gravely concerned about the situation. After Kyiv and Moscow traded accusations over new shelling incidents near the border, France and Germany urged all or some of their citizens in Ukraine to leave and US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said Russian forces were beginning to uncoil and move closer to the border. We hope he (Putin) steps back from the brink of conflict, Austin told a news conference in Lithuania, saying an invasion of Ukraine was not inevitable. Russia ordered the military build-up while demanding NATO prevent Ukraine ever joining the alliance but says Western predictions it is planning to invade Ukraine are wrong and dangerous.
Widely available commercial satellite imagery of Russian troop positions bracketing Ukraine provides a bird’s-eye view of an international crisis as it unfolds. But the pictures, while dramatic, have limitations.High-resolution photos from commercial satellite companies like Maxar in recent days showed Russian troop assembly areas, airfields, artillery positions and other activities on the Russian side of the Ukrainian border and in southern Belarus as well as on the Crimean Peninsula, which…

Satellite images recently captured by Maxar Technologies show that Russia is continuing to deploy new troops and military equipment, likely including field hospitals, near Ukraine''s borders in Crimea, Belarus and western Russia. Why it matters: Secretary of State Anthony Blinken warned Friday that the U.S. believes a Russian invasion of Ukraine could occur soon, even during the Beijing Winter Olympics. The big picture: Russia has already amassed over 100,000 troops and several military vehicles, including tanks, troop transports and fighter jets, near Ukraine''s northern, southern and eastern borders, though Russia has continually denied that it has plans to invade. In addition to troops and military equipment, six Russian warships, including some that could be used in amphibious landing operations against Ukraine, entered the Black Sea from the Mediterranean for naval drills this week, Reuters reports. Russia and Belarus launched their largest joint military exercises ever on Thursday, involving up to 30,000 troops and sophisticated missile systems, and U.S. officials believe that Russia may use the exercises inside Belarus as cover to attack Ukraine from the north, Axios'' Zach Basu reports .

The exercises, scheduled to continue until February 20 in Belarus, had begun and would centre around suppressing and repelling external aggression, Russias defence ministry said in a statement. Soldiers would practise beefing up sections of the Belarus border to block the delivery of weapons and ammunition into the country, among other scenarios, it said.
