Russian attacks increase on civilian areas in Ukraine

09:48pm, Tuesday, 01'st Mar 2022 Chicago Sun-Times
Ukrainian emergency service personnel carry a body of a victim out of the damaged city hall building following shelling in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on Tuesday. Associated Press KYIV, Ukraine — Russian forces escalated their attacks on crowded urban areas Tuesday, bombarding the central square in Ukraine’s second-biggest city and Kyiv’s main TV tower in what the country’s president called a blatant campaign of terror. “Nobody will forgive. Nobody will forget,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy vowed after the bloodshed on the square in Kharkiv. Ukrainian authorities said five people were killed in the attack on the TV tower, which is a couple of miles from central Kyiv and a short walk from numerous apartment buildings. A TV control room and power substation were hit, and at least some Ukrainian channels briefly stopped broadcasting, officials said. Zelenskyy’s office also reported a powerful missile attack on the site of the Babyn Yar Holocaust memorial, near the tower. A spokesman for the memorial said a Jewish cemetery at the site, where Nazi occupiers killed more than 33,000 Jews over two days in 1941, was damaged, but the extent would not be clear until daylight.

40-mile Russian military convoy nears Kyiv

08:50pm, Tuesday, 01'st Mar 2022 POLITICO
A convoy of hundreds of Russian tanks and other vehicles, stretching 40 miles, is nearing Kyiv in an apparent attempt to seize the Ukrainian capital and install a pro-Kremlin regime, the Associated Press reported on Tuesday. High-resolution satellite images captured by U.S. company Maxar Technologies show the convoy heading south toward the Ukrainian capital. On Monday, Maxar […]

Massive Russian military convoy 60 kms long heads towards Kyiv

06:16pm, Tuesday, 01'st Mar 2022 Big News Network
A huge Russian military convoy stretching some 60 kilometres was spotted Monday by a US satellite imaging company just north of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, which has already repulsed several assaults. Satellite photos provided by Maxar, a US company, showed that the convoy, which had been massing since Sunday, had mushroomed to more than 60 kilometres of military vehicles. It said the column covered the ent
KYIV, Ukraine – Russia warned Kyiv residents to flee their homes on Tuesday, March 1, and rained rockets down on Kharkiv, as Russian commanders who have failed to achieve a quick victory shifted their tactics to intensify the bombardment of Ukrainian cities. With an armored column miles long bearing down on the capital, Russia’s defense ministry said it was planning to strike targets in Kyiv used by Ukraine’s security service. Residents near such sites should evacuate their homes, it warned, while giving no information about where in the city of 3 million people those targets were located. Rocket strikes on Kharkiv killed at least 10 people and wounded 35, Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko said. Similar strikes had killed and wounded dozens in the city the previous day. “The rubble is being cleared and there will be even more victims and wounded,” he said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the artillery barrages on Kharkiv amounted to state terrorism. Nearly a week since Russian troops poured over the border, they have failed to capture a single major Ukrainian city after running into far fiercer resistance than they expected. “The Russian army is an artillery army primarily, and it looks like they are shifting into war-fighting mode,” said Nick Reynolds, a land warfare analyst at RUSI in London. “The failure of the Russians to achieve their goals quickly has galvanized Ukraine resistance to them.
Miles-Long Russian Infantry & Tank Convoy Bears Down On Kiev As Next Ceasefire Talks Expected Wednesday "Kyiv is special. If we protect Kyiv, we will protect the state. This is the heart of our country, and it must keep beating," Ukraine''s President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday. He gave a stirring video address to European parliament, the day after he signed a formal application for Ukraine seeking EU membership. "Our people are motivated and we are fighting for freedoms and our lives," Zelensky said. "We are fighting for our survival," he added while urging the body to "prove" that they stand with Ukraine . This as he''s urging both NATO and the US to impose a No-Fly Zone, an appeal which both so far have rejected. Satellite imagery being widely reported on Tuesday morning suggests a massive column of Russian infantry many miles in length is now en route ready to bear down to the Ukrainian capital . Estimates as to its size have varied, but there''s consensus it''s at least many, possibly dozens of miles, long.
Futures, Treasury Yields Tumble As Ukraine News Spike Risk Off Mood In a mirror image of yesterday''s overnight bounce, S&P futures and European markets have slumped to session lows as a risk off mood prevailed as US traders got to their desks having hit overnight highs of 4,399 just before the European open, as mood soured after the conflict in Ukraine intensified amid mounting penalties against Russia, and as participants look to a heavy data-docket ahead and Fed speak including Powell later in the week. Any residual optimism was shattered after Ukrainian President Zelensky said that negotiations with the Russian side have not achieved required results while Russian Defense Minister Shoygu says Russia will continue operations in Ukraine until it achieves its goals. As a result, Nasdaq 100 contracts were down 0.9% as of 7 a.m. in New York after the cash index closed yesterday’s session with its second straight monthly decline, a trend not seen since October 2020. S&P 500 futures declined 0.7% or 30 points to 4,337 while Dow futures fell 0.7% or 230 points, reversing much of yesterday''s last hour ramp.
KYIV/MOSCOW (Reuters) - A huge Russian armoured column bore down on Kyiv on Tuesday, after the lethal shelling of civilian areas in Ukraine''s second largest city raised fears that frustrated Russian commanders could resort to more devastating tactics. Nearly a week since after Moscow launched war on its neighbour it has failed to capture a single major Ukrainian city after running into unexpectedly fierce resistance. Western countries fear that Russian commanders could now unleash the tactics they employed in Syria and Chechnya in recent decades, when they pulverised civilian areas, killing thousands, as they sent in their tanks. Oil company Shell became the latest Western firm to announce it was pulling out of Russia. International sanctions and global financial isolation have had a sudden and devastating impact on Russia''s economy, with the rouble in freefall and queues outside banks as Russians rush to salvage their savings. U.S. satellite company Maxar released pictures showing tanks and fuel trucks snaking along a highway from the north, bearing down on Kyiv along 40 miles (60 km) of highway. "For the enemy, Kyiv is the key target," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who has remained in the capital rallying Ukrainians with regular video updates, said in his latest message overnight. "We did not let them break the defence of the capital, and they send saboteurs to us …

Russian military convoy advancing on Kyiv now stretches for 40 miles

Maxar Technologies, a private US satellite company, also said additional ground forces deployments and ground attack helicopter units were seen in southern Belarus, less than 20 miles north of the Ukraine border. Maxar said the convoy stretches from the Antonov airbase, 17 miles north of Kyiv’s city center, to just north of the Ukrainian town […] The post Russian military convoy advancing on Kyiv now stretches for 40 miles appeared first on Buziness Bytes .
New Delhi: New satellite images show that a Russian military convoy – almost 64 kilometres long – was steadily moving towards the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv from the north. This is more than double the length of the convoy — 17 miles or 37 km — reported earlier, The Guardian said. US-based Maxar Technologies released these […]
Moscow faced increasing isolation on Tuesday, March 1, as President Vladimir Putin showed no sign of stopping an invasion of Ukraine , where fierce fighting and Russian bombardment have killed dozens and sparked a refugee crisis. Russia’s invasion, launched last week, appears not to have achieved the decisive early gains that Putin would have hoped for. The Russian leader faces mounting diplomatic isolation for launching the biggest assault on a European state since World War Two,and the systemic impact of Western sanctions led to a near 30% collapse in the rouble on Monday, February 28, before central bank intervention rescued the currency from its lows. Ceasefire talks held Monday failed to reach a breakthrough and negotiators have not said when a new round would take place. The United States and its allies have imposed sanctions on Russia’s central bank, its top businesses, oligarchs and officials, including Putin himself, and barred some Russian banks from the SWIFT international payments system.
Maxar Technologies said the column covered the entire stretch of road from near Antonov airport, some 29 km from the capital, to the town of Prybirsk - a distance of approximately 64km.
The vast convoy of armoured vehicles, tanks, artillery and support vehicles was 17 miles (25 kilometers) from the center of the city and stretched for about 40 miles, according to satellite imagery from Maxar Technologies.
New satellite images show a large military convoy north of Kyiv, Ukraine extends for almost 40 miles. It is considerably longer than 17 miles as initially reported this morning by Maxar Technologies. Based on additional imagery collected, the Russian military convoy stretches from near Antonov airport in the south to the northern end of the convoy near Prybirsk. Along parts of the route, some vehicles are spaced fairly far apart while in other sections military equipment and units are traveling two or three vehicles abreast on the road. Copyright 2022 NPR.
