KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia’s relentless bombardment of Ukraine edged closer to central Kyiv on Tuesday, with a series of strikes hitting a residential neighborhood as the leaders of three European Union countries planned a bold visit to Ukraine’s embattled capital in a show of support. Shortly before dawn, large explosions thundered across Kyiv from what Ukrainian authorities said was artillery strikes. The shelling ignited a huge fire and a frantic rescue effort in a 15-story apartment building. At least one person was killed and others remain trapped inside. Shockwaves from an explosion also damaged the entry to a downtown subway station that has been used as a bomb shelter. City authorities tweeted an image of the blown-out facade, saying trains would no longer stop at the station. As Russia stepped up its assault on Kyiv, the leaders of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia announced they would travel to Ukraine’s capital Tuesday on a European Union mission to show support for the country “The aim of the visit is to express the European Union’s unequivocal support for Ukraine and its freedom and independence,” Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said in a tweet.
Large explosions were reported in Kyiv on Tuesday as the Russian invasion of Ukraine entered its 20th day. The big picture: Almost all of Russia''s military offensives were stalling and despite launching over 900 missiles Russian forces did not have full air superiority, with Ukraine''s airspace remaining contested, a U.S. defense official told AP . But 20 days of bombardment has caused widespread destruction in Ukrainian cities. Multispectral imagery of fires burning in a residential area in the besieged port city of Mariupol. Russians push toward Kyiv, keep up siege of other cities

05:13am, Saturday, 12'th Mar 2022 New Haven Register
LVIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces appeared to make progress from the northeast in their slow fight toward Ukraine’s capital, while tanks and artillery pounded places already under siege with shelling so heavy that residents of one city were unable to bury the growing number of dead. In past offensives in Syria and Chechnya, Russia’s strategy has been to crush armed resistance with sustained airstrikes and shelling that levels population centers. That kind of assault has cut off the southern port city of Mariupol, and a similar fate could await Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine if the war continues. In Mariupol, unceasing barrages into the city have thwarted repeated attempts to bring in food and water and evacuate trapped civilians. On Friday, an Associated Press photographer captured the moment when a tank appeared to fire directly on an apartment building, enveloping one side in a billowing orange fireball. A deadly strike on a maternity hospital there this week sparked international outrage and war-crime allegations.
