Satellite images released on Wednesday, March 10, show military movements and damage to civilian structures near Kyiv amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. According to Maxar Technologies, the imagery they provided shows armored units maneuvering in and through the surrounding towns close to Antonov Airport, in Hostomel. “Elements of the convoy further north have repositioned and are deployed along tree lines near Lubyanka with towed artillery howitzers in firing positions nearby,” Maxar said. Damage to commercial and residential property is also seen in and around Kyiv and also in Chernihiv, northeast of Kyiv. Credit: Maxar Technologies via Storyful
NATO is not sending troops to the Ukrainian territory just yet, making intelligence stocks look well-positioned to give investors exposure to the ongoing conflict.
The United States on Wednesday, March 9, condemned as “barbaric” the bombing of a children’s hospital in Ukraine, where officials said a Russian air strike buried patients in rubble despite a ceasefire deal for people to flee the besieged city of Mariupol. The attack, which authorities said injured women in labor and left children in the wreckage, is the latest grim incident of the 14-day invasion, the biggest assault on a European state since 1945. The destruction took place despite a Russian pledge to halt firing so at least some trapped civilians could escape the city, where hundreds of thousands have been sheltering without water or power for more than a week. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, asked by Reuters for comment, said: “Russian forces do not fire on civilian targets.” Russia calls its incursion a “special operation” to disarm its neighbor and dislodge leaders it calls “neo-Nazis.” Ukraine’s foreign ministry posted video footage of what it said was the hospital showing holes where windows should have been in a three-story building.
Mariupol''s Deputy Mayor Serhiy Orlov accused Russian forces of attacking evacuation points and violating a temporary cease-fire, later Wednesday. Ukrainian leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on the same day that they hit a maternity hospital with "direct strike", leaving people under the wreckage and burning most of the cars and nature around the building. Russian troops have seized Kherson, the first major Ukrainian city to fall in a devastating week-old war that has already created one million refugees. The capture of the Black Sea city of 290,000 people, which just last year hosted Nato-supported war games, appeared a significant boost for Moscow as it readied for potential ceasefire talks on Thursday. Russian “occupiers” were in “all parts” of Kherson, Ukrainian regional official Gennady Lakhuta conceded late on Wednesday. After a three-day siege that left Kherson short of food and medicine, and struggling to collect and bury its dead, the town''s mayor also announced he was in talks with “armed guests.” He had “made no promises” to the invading forces, but agreed to a night curfew and restrictions on car traffic. “So far so good. The flag flying above us is Ukrainian. And for it to stay that way, these requirements must be met,” he said in a Facebook post. Stalled elsewhere, Russia continues to make significant advances on the southern front, with troops breaking through in Kherson — opening the path west and north — and besieging the larger strategically vital port city of Mariupol.
Ukraine''s State Emergency Service said Wednesday that more than 2,000 civilians had been killed since Russia invaded on Feb. 24. Attacks on civilian areas have increased in the last 48 hours, but the casualty number is impossible to verify. The big picture: The Russian plan to sprint to Kyiv and force a swift capitulation has faltered under stout Ukrainian resistance. But Russian forces are taking towns and cities, particularly in the south, intensifying their bombardments of cities like Kharkiv in the east, and continuing to funnel forces toward the capital. In a defiant address as a seventh day of war began, President Volodymyr Zelensky said the war had unified Ukrainians like nothing before. "We forgave each other. We started loving each other. We help each other. We are worried for each other." Zelensky said Ukrainians had not slept for seven nights but would sleep in a peaceful country "after the victory." What''s next: Russian President Vladimir Putin''s spokesman said Wednesday that Russia''s delegation was prepared for a second round of peace talks on the Ukraine-Belarus border.
