Ukraine Crisis: Shares Slump As Oil Surges In Tokyo

File photo: A pedestrian walks past an electronic board displaying share prices on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in Tokyo on November 4, 2020. Behrouz MEHRI / AFP Tokyo stocks slumped Tuesday as surging oil prices and the Russia-Ukraine crisis continued to drag down global markets. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index dropped 1.71 percent, or 430.46 points, to 24,790.95, while the broader Topix index gave up 1.90 percent, or 34.17 points, to 1,759.86. The dollar fetched 115.52 yen, up from 115.27 yen in New York Monday. The Tokyo market opened in negative territory, tracking falls on Wall Street, although bargain-hunters temporarily lifted the Nikkei above water by mid-morning. But Russia’s intensifying assault on Ukraine continued to weigh on the market, with many investors already jittery about taking risks as they braced for possible further losses on Wall Street later in the day. “Particularly in the afternoon session, investors increased their wariness about rising oil prices, and the Nikkei again extended its losses,” Okasan Online Securities said. “Near the closing bell, the index was hovering near the intra-day low,” the brokerage added.

Nintendo: Console Transition Risk Creates Opportunity

06:50pm, Monday, 07'th Mar 2022 Seeking Alpha
More major gaming companies are joining the boycott against Russia, with Ubisoft and Take-Two putting business on hold amid the country''s invasion of Ukraine. On Monday, Ubisoft updated a blog post in which it expressed support for Ukraine and its team members based there to note it''s pausing sales in Russia. Take-Two, meanwhile, has stopped sales of games and ended marketing support in Russia and Belarus. The publisher also told GamesIndustry.biz it''s preventing people in the two countries from installing its games. That includes Grand Theft Auto V , which is believed to be the third most-popular game in Russia behind Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Dota 2, based on monthly active users. Since the invasion began, many notable gaming companies have withdrawn from Russia, including Activision Blizzard, Epic Games , Microsoft , EA and CD Projekt . Sony also removed Gran Turismo 7 from its Russian storefront just as the game was released elsewhere, while Nintendo halted Switch eShop payments.

Apple is holding its first virtual event of the year on March 8th, and to be honest, I’ve heard rumors about this date for weeks. And don’t get me started on the leaky product selection expected to debut tomorrow at 1 PM ET / 10 AM PT / 6 PM GMT. Engadget The first major announcement is likely to be a new iPhone SE, Apple’s cheapest iPhone, packing 5G. Will it catch up, design-wise, with the rest of the iPhone family? We’re not sure, but it could still have a home button, if that’s what you’re hoping for. That might be the only throwback — we expect it to have the same A15 Bionic chip as the iPhone 13 lineup. It’s also time for a new iPad Air, currently the oldest iPad in Apple’s lineup. Although, it’s not that old, really; it was completely redesigned back in 2020 . That’s not all we’re likely to see, however. A report yesterday suggested we could also get a new external display from Apple. Nintendo suspends digital sales in Russia

03:11pm, Saturday, 05'th Mar 2022 Engadget
Gamers won''t be able to make digital purchases from Nintendo''s Russian eShop for now. The gaming giant has announced that the eShop in Russia has been temporarily placed in maintenance mode "due to the fact that the payment service [it uses] has suspended the processing of payments in rubles." As Nintendo Life notes, people have been reporting about the outage on social networks, showing photos of their Switch getting error code 2813-0999 when they try to access the Russian eShop. It''s unclear if Nintendo itself cut off payments in the region on purpose, or if the company had no choice but to place the eShop in maintenance mode because a third-party processor removed ruble payments from its system. The translated wording seems to indicate that the latter is more likely. Other gaming companies had previously taken steps to limit access to their products and services in Russia. CD Projekt Red halted sales of its games, including Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt , and all titles on its GOG store in Russia and Belarus.

The Morning After: Nintendo’s Switch turns five

12:15pm, Friday, 04'th Mar 2022 Engadget
Nintendo’s return to form, after the miss that was the Wii U, has been impressive. The Switch, equal parts home console and handheld, has been a huge hit for the company and recently surpassed the Wii to become Nintendo’s best-selling console. The hardware — underpowered in specs compared to the competition — has proved flexible and powerful enough, and Nintendo has crushed it with the games. With Zelda: Breath of the Wild , which landed shortly after the console launched, players got not only the best Zelda game in years but arguably (don''t come for me) the best Zelda game. Period. To celebrate its fifth birthday, we’ve pulled together the best games that have cemented the Switch as the versatile, family-friendly console that’s still going strong. Who needs a Switch Pro?
