Inflation, not poverty, is real issue: Shaukat Tarin

KARACHI: Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin downplayed on Friday the incidence of poverty in Pakistan while insisting that its rate has gone down recently. Speaking to journalists at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), Mr Tarin said the latest figures by the World Bank show the incidence of poverty dropped to 4.2 per cent from 5.4pc a year ago. Our problem is inflation, which has affected the lower middle class in urban areas the worst, he said. The adviser said the rural areas were thriving as bumper crops brought prosperity there and led to record sales of motorcycles. He also believed the middle and upper classes were doing well. Restaurants are full of people. Cars are getting expensive, he remarked. Repeating his statement from two weeks ago, Mr Tarin again warned speculators in the foreign exchange market not to play with fire. I warn speculators: the rupee will swing the other way too. Were taking some actions that will change the direction [of the exchange rate movement]. He also reiterated his claim that the rupee was undervalued by roughly Rs10.
Media control: PM urges PTI leaders to expose PML-N

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday directed party leaders to expose Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for gagging the media, saying the fascist party, which used advertisements as a tool to curb press freedom. Talking to party MPAs from Punjab, he said that in the audio in which Maryam Nawaz issued orders not to give advertisements to certain media channels, which she later accepted, should be exposed how the party controlled media by economically crippling them. The PML-N which is basically a fascist party, accuses PTI of being fascist, should be badly exposed for its double standards with regard to media freedom, he added. The minister for information also informed the prime minister about the action after Maryam Nawaz openly accepted that she had given orders not to give advertisements to certain TV channels. PBA demands govt make all media spends of 20 years public The information minister said that a thorough probe into the matter would be done, as to who are the people who benefited from the billions of rupees funds distributed by Maryam to control the media.

In the women''s section, Amritsar proved their mettle to lift the title.This year''s championship was dedicated to the memory of Arjuna awardee Gurdial Singh Malhi of this village.
