McDonald’s, Coke and Starbucks Halt Russia Operations And Sales

02:48pm, Wednesday, 09'th Mar 2022 Baystreet Canada
Major U.S. brands McDonald’s (MCD), Coca-Cola (KO) and Starbucks (SBUX) have each halted their business operations and sales in Russia amid an intensifying backlash over the invasion of Ukraine. The iconic brands, viewed around the world as the face of U.S. capitalism, join hundreds of other global companies that have halted work in Russia since the war began. PepsiCo (PEP) said it would suspend soft drink sales in Russia but would continue to sell daily essentials such as milk and baby formula. After days of criticism on social media, companies with larger or more entrenched operations in Russia are starting to relent as the death toll rises in Ukraine and millions of refugees flee. The moves to step back from Russia will further isolate the nation of 144 million people, which is the world’s 11th-largest economy. Other major companies that have announced a scaling back of their Russia operations include PayPal Holdings (PYPL), which has suspended services in the country; Amazon’s (AMZN) cloud-computing unit announced it will stop accepting new customers in Russia or Belarus; and Rolex, the biggest luxury Swiss watch brand, said it will halt exports to Russia.
S&P Global Inc. said it has decided to suspend commercial operations in Russia, following its invasion of neighboring Ukraine, joining a long list of companies that are withdrawing from the country. "As a provider of independent news, research, benchmarks, and analytics, S&P Global will continue to play our essential role in global markets by providing critical information on Russian markets for our customers to make important decisions," the company said in a statement. "As a purpose-led organization we believe in doing the right thing." The company''s global ratings business downgraded Russia''s sovereign rating on March 3 to push it deeper into junk territory. It lowered the rating to CCC-minus from BB-plus, less than a week after it had first downgraded it to below investment grade. On Tuesday, McDonald''s , Starbucks , PepsiCo and GE all announced plans to pull out of Russia over its attack on Ukraine. S&P shares were up 0.1% premarket and have gained 13.5% in the last 12 months, while the S&P 500 has gained 7.6%.
