Students to return to classrooms in January
07:01am, Friday, 10'th Dec 2021 Jamaica Observer
GEORGETOWN, Guyana, (CMC) - Minister of Education Priya Manickchand announced Wednesday that, when the next school term begins in January 2022, all students in grades 8 to 12 will be expected to return to full-day face-to-face classes, once the Ministry of Health approves. She said the rotation, shift, and blended learning methods have not produced encouraging results, and continuing with that will not properly prepare children for examinations and movement to the next level. "The school doors will not be locked to students who are not vaccinated. But we can no longer continue with the level of distancing that we have been doing," Manickchand said. "We can''t finish the curriculum, and if we can''t finish the curriculum we are failing you. It means you are going into that examination room without knowing what is on that paper or onto the next level without completing the current level." Manickchand said Guyana has vaccines for all people aged 12 and over and she urged those parents who have not yet consented for their children to be vaccinated to use the time between now and January to do so.
US expands Pfizer COVID boosters for children
07:01am, Friday, 10'th Dec 2021 Jamaica Observer
WASHINGTON, United States (AP) - United States health authorities said yesterday that 16 and 17 year olds should get a booster dose of Pfizer''s COVID-19 vaccine once they''re six months past their last shot. The US and many other nations already were urging adults to get booster shots to pump up immunity that can wane months after vaccination, calls that intensified with the discovery of the worrisome new Omicron variant. Yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave emergency authorisation for 16 and 17 year olds to get a third dose of the vaccine made by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech. And hours later, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted the last barrier - saying those teens should get their booster as soon as it''s time. Boosters are important considering that protection against infection wanes over time and "we''re facing a variant that has the potential to require more immunity to be protected," Dr Rochelle Walensky, CDC''s director, told The Associated Press.

Why you should get your COVID booster shot
02:26am, Friday, 10'th Dec 2021 AlterNet
by Cyra Patel , Australian National University ; Jean Li-Kim-Moy , University of Sydney , and Robert Booy , University of Sydney If its been six months since you got the second COVID vaccine dose, its time to book in for your booster shot. This will provide additional protection against COVID, including the new Omicron variant. While the evidence is still emerging, preliminary data suggests a Pfizer booster might give the same protection against Omicron as double-dose vaccination did for the original strain. Why get a booster? When you get your first dose of COVID vaccine, your body produces an immune response against a part of the virus called the spike protein. If youre exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, your immune system can recognise and fight the virus quickly. The immune response to a single dose of COVID vaccine is generally short-lived. So a second dose is needed to have a stronger and longer-lasting response. Over time, the amount of antibodies in your body decreases this is referred to as waning immunity.
