Global business abandons Russia after Ukraine invasion

10:21am, Thursday, 03'rd Mar 2022 Axios
Giant global businesses in every sector are abandoning Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Why it matters: In addition to condemning the invasion, the companies see an impossible environment — from worker safety … to the logistics of getting supplies ... financial and sales disruption ... and the complexity of complying with sanctions. State of play: Financial sanctions have isolated Russia from the rest of the world . Businesses operating in Russia have an increasingly limited ability to collect revenue or pay workers and suppliers. Economic sanctions, including export controls, have curtailed imports . Some workers are being moved out of Russia. Restricted airspace and travel are preventing companies from getting equipment they need to continue to operate. Between the lines: Some companies that have very little physical presence in Russia — including many in tech , retail and media — are limiting how products are used in Russia, or have pulled them. Flashback: Since the Soviet Union''s collapse three decades ago, Russia had been seen as an emerging market with long-term growth potential.

Tokyo stocks close higher as US rate fears ease

08:45am, Thursday, 03'rd Mar 2022 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Tokyo stocks closed higher on Thursday, tracking gains on Wall Street on hopes that the pace of the US Federal Reserve''s rate hikes would be slower than expected. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index closed up 0.70 percent or 184.24 points at 26,577.27 while the broader Topix index rose 1.18 percent or 21.86 points to 1,881.80. The dollar fetched 115.62 yen in Asia, against 115.51 yen on Wednesday in New York. US central bank chief Jerome Powell repeated the need for increasing interest rates to ease inflation, as the US battles consumer prices that are climbing at the fastest pace in four decades, as well as soaring oil. But at the same time, Powell said he favours raising the benchmark borrowing rate by a patient quarter-point at the central bank''s meeting this month, although not entirely ruling out the possibility of more aggressive moves. "Following rallies in US shares, the Nikkei 225 was led by purchases," strategist Mutsumi Kanamori of Daiwa Securities said in a commentary. However, investors are increasingly cautious "ahead of ceasefire talks between Ukraine and Russia" expected later in the day, she added.
Solana-based NFT marketplace Snowcrash will release NFT collections of Bob Dylan and Miles Davis later this year. Solana-based NFT marketplace Snowcrash has announced that Sony Music and Universal Music Group — the two largest music labels in the world — have officially partnered with the upcoming platform. The two music labels will release Bob Dylan and Miles Davis NFT collections later this year, ahead of wider integration with their rosters of artists. Jesse Dylan, who probably not coincidentally is Bob Dylan’s son, is the co-founder of the Snowcrash marketplace, which draws its namesake from Neal Stephenson’s 1992 sci-fi novel that also invented the term Metaverse. Bob Dylan is a major investment by both labels: UMG spent around $400 million on his song catalog in 2020, while Sony bought his recorded music rights for more than $150 million last year. In a statement , Dylan the younger stipulated that the current market for NFTs is just “the tip of the iceberg” and that he opted for the Solana blockchain over the Ethereum network to launch the platform because he believes it is better for the environment.
