Japan''s Nikkei slumps to 15-month low as Ukraine crisis intensifies
04:42am, Friday, 04'th Mar 2022 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Japan''s Nikkei index hit a 15-month low on Friday as global markets remain on edge following reports of Europe''s largest nuclear power plant set on fire amid an intensifying war between Ukraine and Russian troops. The Nikkei index was down 2% at 26,055.49, as of 0212 GMT, after falling up to 3% earlier in the session to touch its lowest level since November 2020. The broader Topix slipped 1.51% to 1,853.42. The Nikkei lost 1.72% so far this week while the Topix is on course to end the week 1.28% lower. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, the largest of its kind in Europe, was on fire early on Friday after an attack by Russian troops, Dmytro Orlov, the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar, said in an online post. Early reports of the incident at the power plant sent financial markets in Asia spiralling, with stocks tumbling and oil prices surging further. "Investors were on the risk-off mood globally because of the news on the fire at the nuclear power plant. Japan''s Nikkei fell the most among other markets because investors used its liquidity and size for a risk hedge," said Chihiro Ohta at the investment research and investor services at SMBC Nikko Securities.

12:51pm, Wednesday, 02'nd Mar 2022 Zero Hedge

Futures, Treasury Yields Tumble As Ukraine News Spike Risk Off Mood
12:51pm, Tuesday, 01'st Mar 2022 Zero Hedge
Futures, Treasury Yields Tumble As Ukraine News Spike Risk Off Mood In a mirror image of yesterday''s overnight bounce, S&P futures and European markets have slumped to session lows as a risk off mood prevailed as US traders got to their desks having hit overnight highs of 4,399 just before the European open, as mood soured after the conflict in Ukraine intensified amid mounting penalties against Russia, and as participants look to a heavy data-docket ahead and Fed speak including Powell later in the week. Any residual optimism was shattered after Ukrainian President Zelensky said that negotiations with the Russian side have not achieved required results while Russian Defense Minister Shoygu says Russia will continue operations in Ukraine until it achieves its goals. As a result, Nasdaq 100 contracts were down 0.9% as of 7 a.m. in New York after the cash index closed yesterday’s session with its second straight monthly decline, a trend not seen since October 2020. S&P 500 futures declined 0.7% or 30 points to 4,337 while Dow futures fell 0.7% or 230 points, reversing much of yesterday''s last hour ramp.
Futures Recover Overnight Losses After Torrid Thursday Rally As Uneasy Calm Returns
12:57pm, Friday, 25'th Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Futures Recover Overnight Losses After Torrid Thursday Rally As Uneasy Calm Returns After yesterday''s furious gamma-squeeze rally, U.S. stock futures were slightly lower on the day, although near the overnight session highs as the ongoing Ukraine conflict and impact of Western sanctions continue to drive risk; sentiment was boosted after the Kremlin said that Ukraine’s neutrality offer is a move “toward positive” and following reports that China''s president Xi held a phone call with Putin who said Russia is willing to conduct high-level negotiations with Ukraine. S&P futures were down 10 points to 0.25% at 7:30am, after paring earlier declines of more than 1%, with Nasdaq futures down -0.15% and Dow futures down 0.4%. Europe''s Stoxx Europe 600 was in the green, and oil was steady after Bloomberg reported that oil importers in China are briefly pausing new seaborne purchases as they assess the potential implications of handling the shipments following the Ukraine invasion. Gold was steady, while Brent crude reached $100 a barrel and Treasuries rose.
Nikkei tumbles over 2% as deepening Ukraine crisis weighs
05:34am, Tuesday, 22'nd Feb 2022 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Japan''s Nikkei share average tumbled more than 2% on Tuesday, extending losses to a fourth session, as sentiment soured further following an escalation in tensions around Ukraine. The Nikkei slid 2.17% to 26,327.90 by the midday break. The broader Topix slumped 1.76% to 1,877.01, also heading for a fourth straight session of losses. Only 11 of the Nikkei''s 225 constituent stocks rose, with one flat and the others falling. Healthcare was the sole sector to rise, pulled up by drugmaker Daiichi Sankyo surging about 10%, after positive results for the Erhertu cancer drug it co-developed with AstraZeneca. Consumer sectors were the worst performers, with basic materials and tech also suffering sizable losses. Tokyo shares end lower Japanese markets will be closed on Wednesday for a public holiday, putting market players in the mind to close out positions, traders said. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops to two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine after recognising them as independent on Monday, accelerating a crisis the West fears could unleash a major war. "Risks around Ukraine have taken a turn for the worse, but at the same time, most of the potential near-term bad news has probably already been priced in by the market," said Makoto Kikuchi, chief executive of Myojo Asset Management.
Futures Tread Water Ahead Of FOMC Mintues As Russia Forgets To Invade Ukraine
12:50pm, Wednesday, 16'th Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Futures Tread Water Ahead Of FOMC Mintues As Russia Forgets To Invade Ukraine The global rally stalled on Wednesday, and U.S. index futures were flat, treading water after a quiet overnight session, ahead of today''s FOMC minutes which some hope will unveil more detail on the Fed''s upcoming rate hike and QT, while also weighing the risks from the Ukraine tensions against inflation and tighter monetary policy. S&P 500 futures were flat and Nasdaq futures were little changed by 7:15 a.m. in New York, trimming earlier gains after NATO Sec. Stoltenberg pushed back on claims of Russian troop withdrawals, adding he is yet to see signs of a de-escalation. Treasury yields, bitcoin, gold and the dollar were also all flat. Oil recovered after the biggest one-day loss this year as worries about potential disruptions to commodity supplies eased. Making a mockery of the Deep State/CIA/CNN which predicted that a Russian invasion would take place today, the Russian defense ministry announced more troops were returning to their bases after maneuvers ended in Crimea, while western officials remained cautious.
Futures Paralyzed Ahead Of Critical CPI Print
12:52pm, Thursday, 10'th Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Futures Paralyzed Ahead Of Critical CPI Print US index futures are unchanged from Wednesday''s close after some rangebound trades in another illiquid, overnight session, as traders were paralyzed and unwilling to commit capital ahead of today''s critical CPI print which consensus expects to come in at 7.2% YoY headline and 5.9% core, but which may well surprise to the downside (we explained why yesterday ) after beating expectations on 8 of the past 10 occasions. A miss will likely send yields lower and risk sharply higher, especially when considering that the BLS will revise its CPI basket weightings and seasonal adjustments today. On the other hand, an upside surprise could spur additional pricing for a 50bp rate hike at the March meeting, currently priced in the swaps market at around 28%, and as such the 830am CPI print will shape views on how aggressively the Federal Reserve will tighten monetary policy in coming weeks. Contracts on the S&P 500 were flat, and the Nasdaq drifted lower after a broad Wall Street rally on Tuesday, US Treasury yields were lower as was the dollar while bond yields in most of Europe ticked higher, as did bitcoin which briefly rose above $45,000 . “This inflation data will provide investors with more clues on how aggressive the Fed could be at its next policy meeting, sparking volatility in both bond and stock markets,” said Pierre Veyret, a technical analyst at ActivTrades.
Tokyo stocks open higher on US gains
05:36am, Thursday, 10'th Feb 2022 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Tokyo stocks opened higher on Thursday after solid gains on Wall Street as investor sentiment improves ahead of a key inflation reading later in the day. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 0.82 percent, or 226.24 points, to 27,806.11 at the open, while the broader Topix index added 0.56 percent, or 11.00 points, to 1,963.22. "Selling is likely to be dominant (in the Japanese market) after gains of US shares," Mizuho Securities said in a note. "But after completing a round of buying, a wait-and-see mood will spread ahead of the US inflation report and Japan''s three-day weekend," the investment bank predicted. Futures Reverse Overnight Gains As Amazon Euphoria Fizzles
01:05pm, Friday, 04'th Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Futures Reverse Overnight Gains As Amazon Euphoria Fizzles We warned last night that the surge in futures following the huge bounce in Amazon stock wouldn''t last (simply because a closer read of the company''s earnings left a lot to be desired) and sure enough, in the overnight (extremely illiquid) session, 500 futures erased gains of as much as 1.3% to trade 0.1% lower, or 10 points, to 4,460 as European stocks extend their decline as inflation and monetary tightening outweighed earnings optimism. Meanwhile, Nasdaq 100 futures pared much of their gains, trading just 0.5% higher after earlier rising more than 2%, one day after the index had the worst day since September 2020. The VIX increased for a third day Friday, hovering just below 26. The dollar dropped as the EUR surge continued, following yesterday''s unexpectedly hawkish comments from Lagarde ... while oil was on course for a seventh weekly advance with Brent rising Relief, as brief as it was, was welcome after a 4.2% crash in the Nasdaq 100 Index on Thursday, its biggest since 2020, fueled by a 26% rout in Meta Platforms following disappointing results.
