U.S. accuses financial website of spreading Russian propaganda
02:16pm, Tuesday, 15'th Feb 2022 AOL
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. intelligence officials on Tuesday accused a conservative financial news website with a significant American readership of amplifying Kremlin propaganda and alleged five media outlets targeting Ukrainians have taken direction from Russian spies. The officials said Zero Hedge, which has 1.2 million Twitter followers, published articles created by Moscow-controlled media that were then shared by outlets and people unaware of their nexus to Russian intelligence. The officials did not say whether they thought Zero Hedge knew of any links to spy agencies and did not allege direct links between the website and Russia. Zero Hedge denied the claims and said it tries to “publish a wide spectrum of views that cover both sides of a given story.” The officials briefed The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence sources. It was the latest effort by President Joe Biden''s administration to release U.S. intelligence findings about Russian activity involving Ukraine as part of a concerted push to expose and influence the moves of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Musk donated over $5.7bn in Tesla shares to charity in Nov
07:30am, Tuesday, 15'th Feb 2022 Business Recorder
SAN FRANCISCO: Tesla chief executive Elon Musk donated a total of 5,044,000 shares in the world''s most valuable automaker to a charity from Nov. 19 to Nov. 29 last year, its filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) showed on Monday. The donation was worth $5.74 billion, based on the closing prices of Tesla shares on the five days that he donated the stock. The filing did not disclose the name of the charity. The donation came as the billionaire sold $16.4 billion worth of shares after polling Twitter users about offloading 10% of his stake in the electric-car maker in early November. He said on Twitter that he would pay more than $11 billion in taxes in 2021 due to his exercise of stock options set to expire this year. He also traded barbs with politicians Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren who called on wealthy people to pay more taxes. Analysts have said there would be a tax benefit for Musk potentially gifting Tesla stock, since shares donated to charity are not subject to capital gains tax, as they would be if sold. "His tax benefit would be huge," said Bob Lord, an associate fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies who studies tax policy. "He''d save between 40% and 50% of the $5.7 billion in tax, depending on whether he could take the deduction against his California income and he''d avoid the gains tax he would have to pay if he sold the stock." Lord added that Musk might have contributed the stock to intermediaries such as "donor-advised funds," not outright to charitable groups.

Rights group takes Nigeria to court over non-disclosure of Twitter agreement
01:01pm, Monday, 14'th Feb 2022 BusinessDay
A Nigerian rights group has asked the High Court to force the federal government to publish its agreement with Twitter (TWTR.N) that led to the restoration of the social media’s services after a six-month ban. According to Reuters Nigeria suspended Twitter media services in June 2021 after the U.S. Company removed a post from President Muhammadu Buhari that threatened to punish regional secessionists. However, on January 13, 2022, the federal government lifted the ban on Twitter after the company agreed, among other conditions, to open a local office and work with the government to co-develop a code of conduct. On Sunday, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) filed a lawsuit with the country’s High Court to compel President Buhari and Lai Mohammed, the Information Minister to publish a copy of that agreement. “Publishing the agreement with Twitter would promote transparency, accountability, and help to mitigate threats to Nigerians’ rights online, as well as any interference with online privacy and freedom of expression. “Any agreement with social media companies must meet the constitutional requirements of legality, necessity, proportionality and legitimacy.” SERAP said.
