Russia Fines Google With Record $100 Million For Allowing Banned Content
03:05pm, Friday, 24'th Dec 2021 Zero Hedge
Russia Fines Google With Record $100 Million For Allowing Banned Content Russia has dramatically escalated its long-running battle with Google after repeatedly accusing it and other major US-based internet platforms of ignoring Russian laws on obscenity as well as propaganda, with on Friday a Moscow court slapping an unprecedented fine of almost $100 million on Google . The content under dispute which state media regulator Roskomnadzor has demanded the removal of includes pornographic material, as well as posts that reportedly promote drugs and suicide . Crucially the regulator and Kremlin officials have long charged Google with promoting politically subversive messaging with the intent to stir up protests in support of jailed dissident Alexei Navalny . Pro-Navalny protests groups were previously banned as "extremist" earlier in the year. Essentially Russia has accused Silicon Valley-based internet companies of allowing themselves to be used as a hidden hand of US foreign policy inside Russia , also promoting controversial content like transgenderism among Russia''s youth - which is also outlawed under recent legislation related to ''propagandizing'' minors with sexually explicit and corrupting material.

The Morning After: Is it time for lickable TVs?
12:15pm, Friday, 24'th Dec 2021 Engadget
I joked about LGs unusual TVs earlier this week, but I''ll take it back. Those were fine. Sensible, even. Thats because a Meiji University professor in Japan has unveiled a prototype screen called Taste the TV. The prototype sends electrical signals to 10 flavor canisters that spray flavors on a film overlay for those willing to lick. Creator Homei Miyashita thinks of the device as less of a taste-at-home device, and more as a tool for food professionals, like chefs and sommeliers. The prototype is, yes, a little icky, despite the hygienic film that can be treated between tastings. According to Reuters , Miyashita is already discussing spin-off applications for the spray tech, like applying pizza or chocolate flavors to a slice of toasted bread. Dont tell him about Nutella. Facebook owner Meta appeals UK ruling that it must sell Giphy
05:02am, Friday, 24'th Dec 2021 Rappler
Facebook owner Meta is appealing Britains ruling that it must sell animated images platform Giphy, saying the evidence does not support the finding that the deal is a threat to its rivals or could impact competition in display advertising. Britains Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) ordered Meta to sell Giphy , which it acquired for a reported $400 million in May 2020, last month after it decided the remedies offered by the US company did not answer its concerns. It was the first time the British regulator had blocked a major digital acquisition, and it signalled a step change in its scrutiny of big tech companies. We are appealing the CMAs Giphy decision and will seek a stay of the CMAs order to divest, a Meta spokesperson said on Thursday. The decision to block the deal is wrong on the law and the facts, and the evidence does not support the CMAs conclusions or remedy. Half of traffic to Giphys huge library of looping videos comes from Metas platforms Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.
