Social media platforms are beginning to crack down on Russian state media in response to the Kremlin''s efforts to tighten controls around internet communications. Why it matters: Tech giants that provide services around the world prefer not to take sides in conflicts where they operate in both combatants'' territory, but Russia''s invasion of Ukraine is making that stance tough to maintain. Driving the news: Google said late Saturday it is pausing monetization of Russian state-funded media across its platforms, hours after its subsidiary YouTube announced a similar measure, citing "extraordinary circumstances in Ukraine." A YouTube spokesperson noted it will also be "significantly limiting recommendations to these channels." Facebook parent Meta on Friday said it would also prohibit Russian state media "from running ads or monetizing on our platform anywhere in the world," per a tweet from its head of security policy, Nathaniel Gleicher. Twitter also said Friday it would temporarily pause advertisements in Ukraine and Russia "to ensure critical public safety information is elevated and ads don’t detract from it." State of play: Social networks have for many months labeled accounts for outlets such as RT and Sputnik as Russian state media.
The moves come as U.S. tech platforms are under pressure to take a stronger stance against Russia and limit disinformation.
Facebook and Twitter said on Saturday they were barring Russian state-linked media from running ads or making money off of their platforms in response to Moscow’s military operation in Ukraine. Nathaniel Gleicher, the head of policy security at Meta, Facebook’s parent company, said “Russian state media” were banned from “running ads or monetizing on our …

Russia blocks Twitter access for some users, company says

02:03am, Sunday, 27'th Feb 2022 United Press International
Russia is reportedly blocking access to Twitter as users criticize the country''s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
YouTube has temporarily barred Russia Today (RT) and a handful of other Russian channels from earning ad revenue. Citing “extraordinary circumstances” and the recent sanctions against the country, the company told Reuters it was putting a pause on the ability of several channels to monetize their content on the platform. Additionally, YouTube said videos from those content creators would appear less frequently in user recommendations, and that RT and a handful of other channels would no longer be accessible in Ukraine following a request from the country’s government. YouTube did not provide Reuters with a full list of the restricted channels. We’ve reached out to the company for comment and more information. It’s hard to say how much of an effect the restrictions will have on those channels. In 2019 , internet research firm Omelas estimated the Kremlin generated $27 million in ad revenue between 2017 and 2018. Over the span of a 12 year period, Russia has earned as much as $73 million in YouTube ad revenue from RT and other state-affiliated channels.

Russia Restricts Twitter Access Amidst Ukraine Invasion

07:07pm, Saturday, 26'th Feb 2022 Global Village Extra
Russia has limited Twitter in parts of Russia, Twitter has confirmed. In a statement, the company said “We’re aware that Twitter is being restricted for some people in Russia and are working to keep our services safe and accessible”. On Friday Russia restricted Facebook after a clash over “censorship”. Russia’s communications regulator Roskomnadzor accused Facebook of violating “the rights and freedoms of Russian citizens”. Facebook said it had refused to stop fact-checking and labelling content from state-owned news organisations. Internet connectivity watchers at NetBlocks say there is a total or near-total restriction on Twitter in Russia. The actions follow Russia’s attack on Ukraine with many videos and images of the invasion going viral on social media. The BBC’s Moscow correspondent, Steve Rosenberg, said he’d had difficulty tweeting. Circumvention for those in Russia is currently possible using VPN services, which can work around government-imposed restrictions. NetBlocks Director Alp Toker told the BBC: “Russia’s restriction of Twitter will significantly limit the free flow of information at a time of crisis when the public most need to stay informed.” Roskomnadzor has not announced actions against Twitter.
Facebook is prohibiting Russian state media from running advertisements, and Twitter is pausing ads so they don''t detract from critical public safety information.
