Tokyo stocks close higher with eyes on earnings
07:38am, Tuesday, 08'th Feb 2022 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Tokyo stocks closed higher on Tuesday as expectations for economic recovery were partly offset by concerns over tensions between the United States and China, with investors focused on corporate earnings reports. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index ended up 0.13 percent, or 35.65 points, at 27,284.52 while the broader Topix index was up 0.42 percent, or 8.07 points, at 1,934.06 at the close. "Reports that the number of new coronavirus infections are declining in the US prompted gains for the Nikkei in early trade, on hopes for the resumption of economic activity," Okasan Online Securities said in a note. But the upward movement was short-lived "as risk-aversion grew on worries about US-China relations", it added. European stocks rally at open after Tokyo, US gains The dollar fetched 115.41 yen in Asian trade, against 115.10 yen in New York late Monday. Toshiba was down 1.77 percent at 4,715 yen after it unveiled plans to split into two companies, revising a controversial proposal to divide into three following a tumultuous period for the storied industrial conglomerate.

Key Events This Week: All Eyes On The CPI
02:54pm, Monday, 07'th Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Key Events This Week: All Eyes On The CPI After what DB''s Jim Reid describes as "a week for the ages" this week should be calmer until of course US CPI comes along on Thursday. As the Deutsche strategist notes, in his look back at a hell of a week, what made last week so fascinating was the rare interplay between macro and micro. Not only did the rates world shake and reverberate (2yr bunds +35.9bps and the worse week since 2008), but on successive days we saw the biggest market cap fall in history for any company (Meta), followed by the biggest rise ever (Amazon). We have 83 S&P 500 companies reporting this week but no Goliath sized ones, so it''ll be a more normal week for earnings. The macro and micro last week was enough to push the Russian/Ukraine tensions into the background but they are clearly still there so we have to watch out for that as well. Over the weekend ECB governor Knott (a hawk) became the first ECB official to confirm what we reported last week, when he endorsed a 2022 hike by suggesting that he expects a hike around Q4 and another in Spring 2023, and that they are most likely to be in 25bps increments.
Futures Tread Water Amid Peripheral Bond Rout As Key CPI Print Looms
12:48pm, Monday, 07'th Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Futures Tread Water Amid Peripheral Bond Rout As Key CPI Print Looms U.S. index futures swung around in a volatile, illiquid overnight session, and at last check were flat despite traders'' concerns about growing fireworks in the European bond market where Italian and Greek bond plunged amid fears of ECB rate hikes as soon as October, while waiting for Thursday''s key CPI data and further corporate earnings. S&P 500 futures were up 2 points or 0.05%, Nasdaq futures were up 26 points or 0.18% and Dow futures were up fractionally as markets now expect more than five quarter-point Federal Reserve interest-rate hikes in 2022 to keep inflation on check following a strong U.S. jobs report. Treasury yields and the dollar were stable, while the euro snapped a six-day strengthening run. WTI crude fell after last week''s rally. Chinese shares climbed on their return from a weeklong holiday. Bitcoin extended its recovery surge. In the premarket, Peloton was in focus, soaring 27% on reports it''s evaluating interest from potential suitors including Amazon and Nike.
Nissan Alliance to Invest $25.7 Billion in Electric Vehicles
08:35am, Monday, 07'th Feb 2022 The Kenyan Wall Street
The Nissan auto alliance (Nissan, Renault and Mitsubishi) has announced plans to invest $25.7 billion in electric vehicles over the next five years, marking the latest massive cash injection into the fast-growing sector by the auto industry. The Alliance says the latest outlay followed more than 10 billion euros already spent on its offensive strategy in electrification, promising 35 new electric models by 2030. To achieve its goals, the alliance aims to increase co-operation on common platforms from 60% to 80% of its models by 2026. The companies also announced a goal of reaching a total electric vehicle battery production capacity of 220 Gigawatt hours by the end of the decade, with Nissan tasked with leading the development of solid-state battery technology. In December last year, Toyota also unveiled a more ambitious plan for its electric vehicle business, hiking its EV sales goal by 75%. Volkswagen has also said it will bulk up its investment in electric vehicles and digitalisation to 89 billion euros over the next five years.

Tech Bounces Back - But For How Long?
01:32pm, Wednesday, 02'nd Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Tech Bounces Back - But For How Long? Authored by Bill Blain via MorningPorridge.com, “If I’m selling a Tesla, then of course it’s a better car” A bounce back rally is underway – but its reactive, based on the hopes of “buy-the-dippers”, and the fundamentals haven’t changed. Many weakening Tech stocks are seeing their foundations exposed as built on sand. The Bounce Back Rally So much to think about in terms of markets this morning. It feels like time to play a tactical game as the bounce back recovery rally I predicted last month, (which I suggested will occur for all the wrong reasons), is underway. A whole bunch of improbable stocks like Tesla, and current-story stocks like Spotify surged on the back of immediate reactions to news and events. The questions for markets are simple: is this a new up-wave in the remorseless tide of ever higher Tech valuations, have valuations changed, have the underlying market fundamentals swung back in favour, or is this a dead-cat Tech bounce before the brutal reality of a changed market base again bites expectations..?

02:17pm, Tuesday, 01'st Feb 2022 Business Standard
Top passenger vehicle makers, Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota Kirloskar Motor and Honda, on Tuesday reported decline in vehicle dispatches from factories to dealers in January amid shortage of semiconductors continuing to hamper production.
