Most Gulf bourses pull back on Ukraine tensions

01:08pm, Sunday, 20'th Feb 2022 Business Recorder
Most stock markets in the Gulf ended lower on Sunday after Russia and Belarus extended military drills north of Ukraine, dashing Western hopes that diplomacy might resolve the crisis. The decision to extend military exercises was taken because of increased military activity near the borders of Russia and Belarus and an escalation of the situation in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbass, the Belarus ministry said in a statement. Saudi Arabia''s benchmark index fell 0.1%, as most of the stocks on the index were in negative territory including SABIC Agri-Nutrient. However, the index''s losses were limited by gains at Al Rajhi Bank, which concluded 5.9% higher after the lender announced board''s proposal to increase capital to 40 billion riyals ($10.66 billion) by issuing bonus shares. Separately, Nahdi Medical Co, Saudi Arabia''s market leader in retail pharmacy, on Sunday announced its intention to list on the local bourse by selling 30% of its shares, joining a spate of new initial public offerings in the kingdom.
The UAE, OPEC''s third biggest crude producer, said it is committed to meeting India''s energy demand as the growing oil consumer seeks to secure supplies with prices surging to near $100/b. The commitment to supplying India is included in the Joint UAE-India Vision Statement, which follows the signing of the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement on Feb. 18, according to

Preventable pains of fuel scarcity

03:24am, Sunday, 20'th Feb 2022 BusinessDay
The queues are long-winding and tortuous. The crowds of fuel-seekers are agitated and visibly angry. The attendants at the few fuel filling stations are ever-ready to attend mostly to the highest bidders, ready to part with some extra cash. Not long after, the jostling for the much-needed fuel degenerates into bloody fisticuffs, as verbal missiles are exchanged more freely than bullets at the battle-field. Valuable man-hours are wasted and lost, but who really cares. At least, not right here and now in Nigeria. With all these scandalous scenarios unfolding in a country where crude oil was reportedly discovered in commercial quantity, precisely in Oloibiri, Bayelsa state some 66 years ago, it elicits no arguments when it is described as more of a curse than an economic cure. Or how else can any sane citizen explain that the host communities have had to bear the brunt of gross environmental degeneration; with oil spillage that has stifled out fishing and farming activities and carbon-monoxide fumes that have choked lives out of not a few residents.
Cleanup crews from Hydro One are continuing their work at the Don River on Saturday after an oil spill from one of its transmission sites a day earlier leaked into the river.
Biden Administration Pushes For Even More "Climate Roadblocks" For Upcoming Oil And Gas Projects Having apparently learned nothing from oil prices skyrocketing out of control, President Biden is now intent on adding even more "climate roadblocks" to upcoming oil and gas projects in the United States. The administration has "altered the official federal policy on approving new interstate natural gas facilities and pipelines, requiring a climate consideration", according to The Daily Signal . Biden''s cabinet prompted the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to begin to undertake a robust consideration of the environmental impacts of fossil fuel projects seeking approval in the United States. Meanwhile, oil continues its ascent to $100/barrel. The agency said that projects that cause 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year will be recognized as having a "significant impact" on the environment. It also said that, during the approval process it may now "consider the eventual emissions caused by both upstream production and eventual burning of gas transported in a pipeline requiring approval." FERC Chairman Rich Glick commented: I believe todays long overdue policy statements are essential to ensuring the Commissions natural gas siting decisions are reflective of all stakeholder concerns and interests.

The Cure For High Oil Prices Might Just Be Higher Oil Prices

12:00am, Sunday, 20'th Feb 2022 OilPrice com
Fundamentals and geopolitics have pushed oil prices rallying by 20 percent so far this year to levels last seen in the autumn of 2014. The price at over $90 a barrel is up by more than 60 percent from this time last year, and many analysts say that $100 oil is now a matter of when, not if. Oil majors and oil-producing countries part of the OPEC+ alliance have seen the benefits of rallying oil prices with huge cash flows and profits, and government oil revenues, respectively. While these handsome benefits of the high oil prices

The Cost Of Living In The US Is Rising To Absolutely Absurd Levels Authored by Michael Snyder via The Economic Collapse blog, Most of the time, the vast majority of Americans simply do not care about economics. And it pains me to say that, because I have been running a website about economics for more than a decade. But it is true. Under normal circumstances, most hard working Americans dont have the time or the energy to debate the finer points of economic policy. But now things have changed. Here in 2022, our leaders have messed things up so badly that suddenly just about everyone is feeling the pain. Most people just want economic conditions to return to normal, but that isnt going to be so easy. Over the past couple of years, the Federal Reserve has pumped trillions of fresh dollars into the financial system. You just cant undo that. And our politicians in Washington have been on the biggest borrowing spree in all of human history. I think that many of them truly believed that there would never be any serious consequences, but as Forbes has aptly noted , we are now paying a heavy price for this magical thinking Unfortunately, Americans are now paying a heavy price for this magical thinking.
