Germany''s incoming government wants to end coal use by 2030
06:55am, Friday, 26'th Nov 2021 Engadget
Germany plans to phase out coal use by 2030, eight years earlier than previously planned, as part of its latest climate pledge. That same year, the country wants 80 percent of its electricity to come from renewable sources. Per the BBC , Olaf Scholz, the leader of Germanys Social Democratic Party, announced the plan on Wednesday as part of a deal that will see the former vice-chancellor govern the country at the head of a three-party coalition made up of the Greens and Free Democrats. Germanys September 28th national election saw the Greens claim 118 seats in the Bundestag, making it the partys best-ever showing. Scholz is expected to tap Greens leader Annalena Baerbock to serve as his foreign minister. Moreover, its likely Greens co-leader Robert Habeck will get the vice-chancellorship and the chance to oversee the countrys energy transition. Notably, the coalition didnt set a more aggressive emissions reduction target. By 2030, the country still plans to cut emissions by 65 percent from 1990 levels.

Asian natural gas buyers have had to pay record prices for LNG cargoes in recent weeks, as the global energy crunch sent spot prices skyrocketing amid scarce supply. But Asias problem with natural gas supplies may not be limited to this winter aloneand even a scenario where the world manages to pull off its climate change goals could see Asia short on nat gas. Prices have eased somewhat since the all-time highs in October, but demand for natural gas in Asia will continue to rise not only this winter but in all winters and summers

The international climate summit sidelined a central issue for cutting emissions
11:56pm, Tuesday, 23'rd Nov 2021 AlterNet
The impact of agriculture on climate change is significant. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the agriculture sector is responsible for 10 percent of the total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions , after transportation (29 percent), electricity production (25 percent), industry (23 percent), and commercial and residential usage (13 percent). However, according to Peter Lehner, managing attorney for EarthJustice, a nonprofit environmental law firm, the EPA estimate is "almost certainly significantly quite low." Lehner argues that most analyses exclude five unique sources of emissions from the farming sector: soil carbon (carbon released during the disturbance of soil), lost sequestration (carbon that would still be sequestered in the ground had that land not been converted into farmland), input footprints (carbon footprint for products used in agriculture, like the manufacturing of fertilizer), difficult measurements (it is harder to measure the carbon emissions of biological systems like agriculture than it is to measure the emissions of other industries that are not biological, like transportation), and potent gases (like methane and nitrous oxide).
