$200 oil could lead to global recession: Jeff Rubin

03:21pm, Tuesday, 15'th Mar 2022 Financial Post
Watch: CIBC World Markets'' Jeff Rubin on how oil prices will affect the economy
Is The Stock Market Starting To Discount An Earnings Recession? Authored by Jesse Felder via The Felder Report, About five months ago, after the stock market started to correct last fall, I suggested in a blog post the weakness might be due to the fact that it was increasingly looking like there might be an earnings recession on the horizon. Stocks rallied from that point but breadth continued to deteriorate , insider selling surged and the monetary tailwind began to abate . At the same time, interest rates, oil prices and the dollar have all continued their individual uptrends, putting even greater pressure on both end demand for products and services and the profit margins corporations can earn on them. As such, the probability of an earnings recession, possibly a very significant one, has only grown over the past few months. Small businesses are already signaling as much . In fact, the relative performance of small cap stocks points to more than just an earnings recession . Due to the rapid rise in oil prices and the dramatic fall in consumer sentiment , the probability of an economic recession is beginning to grow.

Tory MPs in target seats fear political impact of fracking

02:00pm, Tuesday, 15'th Mar 2022 The Guardian
Analysis: Many potential sites are either in ‘red wall’ areas or former safe constituencies in the south • Survey shows only five of 138 MPs in affected seats voice support Look at the map of onshore exploration licences in the UK, and you could be forgiven for thinking it was an illustration of target seats for opposition parties in the next general election. Ministers privately acknowledge that “rethinking” fracking would be politically very difficult. Those areas most ripe for the controversial oil and gas extraction method are marginals in the “red wall” of constituencies in the north that historically have tended to be Labour, many of which were won by the Tories in 2019. Many of the others are former safe Conservative seats in the south where the Liberal Democrats are limbering up to pick off disillusioned former Tory voters. Continue reading…

Willie Obiano, the state governor, said the resumption of flights from Abuja and Kano from March 11 “is historic because it will help end the awful trend in Africa where passengers from some African cities would have to fly to Paris or London or Madrid or Lisbon to catch a connecting flight to some other African city”, according to Don Adinuba, information and public enlightenment commissioner. “We are proud that a worthy indigene of Anambra State, Allen Onyema, founder and chairman of Air Peace , is playing a significant role in ending this regional blight which has been most embarrassing to all of us who are Africans”. Noting that Nigeria and Niger Republic are not just two neighbouring countries, Adinuba quoted Governor Obi as saying the citizens of both nations have so much in common. “The cultural propinquity between them is remarkably deep”, he stated, adding: “The Hausa language, for instance, is commonly spoken in both countries, and there are numerous families with members in both places”.
