Foxconn, better known as Hon Hai Precision Industry and famous for assembling Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhones, saw its third-quarter net profit climb 17% compared to last year, propelled by a surge in artificial intelligence (AI) server business.

The company reported revenue hitting 2.06 trillion New Taiwan dollars (around $66.29 billion), aligning with expectations, but net profit came in stronger at 57.67 billion NTD versus 50.41 billion NTD forecast. This signals healthy momentum in Foxconn's pivot towards AI-related manufacturing.

Foxconn's shift into producing server racks tailored for AI workloads has positioned it as a critical manufacturing partner to Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA), a leader in AI chips. This move is paying off, riding the wave of rising demand for AI infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Foxconn expects continuous quarterly growth during the typically busy second half of the year. This optimism stems from increasing AI server shipments and stronger demand for information and communications technology (ICT) products. Yet, the firm remains cautious about potential headwinds from global political, economic uncertainties, and currency fluctuations.

The "Cloud and Networking" segment drove year-over-year growth, buoyed by AI server rack production. Industry analyst Ivan Lam notes Foxconn's strategic trade-off where it sacrifices some consumer electronics projects to prioritize higher-growth areas like AI servers-a classic "follow the cash" approach that boosts long-term prospects.

The company's focus is not just on AI data centers. Foxconn is also making moves in electrified and autonomous vehicles. It's collaborating with automaker Stellantis (NYSE: STLA) and ride-share giant Uber (NYSE: UBER) to develop Level 4 autonomous vehicles-vehicles capable of driverless operation without a human safety driver.

Most recently, Foxconn signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Mitsubishi Electric to jointly deliver energy-efficient AI data center solutions globally. Both companies aim to leverage their technical know-how to explore novel business models in this space.

While logistical challenges, fluctuating component prices, and currencies might weigh on margins, Foxconn's results so far suggest resilience. Its ongoing reinvention from a consumer device assembler to a powerhouse in AI infrastructure and next-gen transportation tech is becoming clearer each quarter.

Foxconn's AI bets appear to be paying off, but the question remains: can it sustain this growth acceleration amid the choppy geopolitical and economic waters ahead?
