Netflix Inc. is making a hefty bet on artificial intelligence with its move to acquire InterPositive, the AI-powered filmmaking company founded by Ben Affleck. Reports indicate the total deal could reach as high as $600 million, placing this among Netflix's largest acquisitions to date.

The purchase price reportedly involves a base amount paid upfront in cash, with additional earn-outs tied to performance metrics. Netflix hasn't officially revealed the deal's details, but this strategic acquisition follows its failed attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery Inc.

InterPositive specializes in AI tools that allow filmmakers to edit and tweak existing footage with remarkable precision. Notably, acclaimed director David Fincher has already leveraged the technology on a forthcoming film featuring Brad Pitt, demonstrating its growing influence on high-profile productions.

This deal stands out as one of the biggest AI investments made so far by a major Hollywood studio. Industry giants such as Netflix and Amazon are racing to implement AI solutions that trim production costs and enhance content quality. Alongside Netflix, Amazon's internal AI division and Disney's partnership with OpenAI signal a tech-driven transformation in entertainment.

However, this technological push has stirred unease among Hollywood unions concerned AI could threaten traditional jobs and lead to creative exploitation. There are worries that unlicensed use of artists' works to train AI models might become widespread, sparking debates over intellectual property rights within the entertainment sphere.

Affleck positioned InterPositive as a filmmaker-friendly platform, emphasizing that the AI requires filmmakers to first shoot footage before it can assist in post-production edits. Unlike generative AI tools, it does not produce original content without a pre-existing film to work from.

Netflix's pivot to acquiring a cutting-edge startup contrasts with its previous growth approach focusing on organic development rather than expensive mergers. The InterPositive deal reveals Netflix's readiness to bolster its internal AI capabilities as the movie-making process continues evolving with advancing technology.

Affleck, reflecting on this evolution, described filmmaking as a continual technological journey, hoping InterPositive represents the next step toward making movies feel more authentic and immersive. Co-founded quietly with backing from RedBird Capital Partners, InterPositive began courting investors in 2025 before securing the Netflix deal.

The acquisition underscores the shifting tides in content creation as AI-integrated workflows become increasingly mainstream. How these technologies reshape creative control and production economics remains to be seen.
