SpaceX experienced a 12% drop in its stock price on Wednesday after unveiling a significant increase in capital expenditures, primarily driven by investments in artificial intelligence.

During its inaugural earnings report as a public company, SpaceX disclosed its second-quarter capex soared to $18.4 billion, a sixfold rise compared to prior periods. This ramp-up predominantly reflects spending on AI infrastructure, exceeding market expectations and causing jitters among shareholders.

Since its public debut, SpaceX's shares have struggled to maintain early highs, closing just above $125 following Tuesday's session, below the IPO price of $135 and far from the post-listing peak above $200.

Competition is heating in the AI cloud computing arena. Although SpaceX's AI models trail leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic, the company aims to carve a niche by leasing out computing power built from Nvidia chips, positioning itself as a contender in cloud services targeting AI workloads.

SpaceX's Chief Financial Officer, Bret Johnsen, addressed the spending concerns, emphasizing efficiency in capex deployment. He reassured the market stating that investments into AI compute resources are structured for payback periods of less than a year.

Elon Musk projected a more ambitious revenue timeline, now anticipating SpaceX reaching $1 trillion in annual revenue by 2030, a year sooner than previously forecasted. This announcement came despite SpaceX continuing to report sizable losses as it invests heavily in future growth sectors.

The strong focus on growth raises questions about how quickly SpaceX can scale its operations profitably and manage mounting costs, a skepticism echoed by industry observers such as Steve Westly, who flagged ongoing concerns about the company's path to profitability.

Adding to the stock pressure is the upcoming expiration of insider lock-ups, which opens the door for company insiders to sell shares, potentially increasing market supply and volatility around the stock.

SpaceX is clearly staking a claim in the AI cloud space, but the shares seem to be signaling investor apprehension over the hefty price tag of its ambitions. Whether these investments pay off as rapidly as the company hopes remains to be seen.
