After weeks of mounting tension and volatility, an eleventh-hour ceasefire has been declared between the US and Iran. Both sides have spun the deal as a win, although the details suggest a fragile pause rather than a lasting truce. President Donald Trump emphasized reopening the Strait of Hormuz as a key victory, while Iran's government highlighted conditions for halting aggression.

The Strait of Hormuz represents a critical artery for global oil shipments, and its reopening for vessel passage was a major sticking point. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi committed to coordinating maritime traffic during the ceasefire period. This move has temporarily eased fears of a sustained disruption in energy markets, which had already been roiled by the conflict.

The deal itself seems tenuous. In Iran's 10-point ceasefire outline, compensation and a halt to attacks on Iranian positions are listed as prerequisites. Trump's acceptance of these terms came less than two hours before a hard deadline, indicating how close the situation came to spiraling further.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has positioned itself as a broker here. Its Prime Minister invited delegations from both Washington and Tehran to Islamabad for diplomatic talks scheduled this Friday, signaling regional interest in moving beyond hostilities. This step could potentially open the door for more durable negotiations, albeit with many obstacles ahead.

However, the ceasefire does not extend everywhere. Israel, according to statements from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, will halt strikes against Iran but continues air attacks in southern Lebanon. This exception highlights the complexity of Middle Eastern conflicts and the limited reach of the US-Iran arrangement.

The ceasefire's impact on markets surfaced immediately. Oil prices, which had been skyrocketing amid fears of supply disruptions, dropped sharply once the announcement hit. Yet experts warn that despite this relief, energy prices are unlikely to tumble quickly given underlying global demands and geopolitical risks.

Iranian officials framed this temporary ceasefire as a strategic win, partly because it preserves some dignity and control over key negotiation points like the Strait of Hormuz. On the other side, Trump's administration can point to a cessation of hostilities and the lifting of immediate threats to maritime commerce.

As the world watches the clock toward the end of the two-week period, the question remains: will this ceasefire serve as a genuine foundation for peace, or simply a pause before tensions flare again? The answer might hinge on the outcomes of the upcoming Islamabad talks and the willingness of both sides to engage earnestly.
