Trump to Announce Federal Reserve Chair Nominee Friday After Meeting Kevin Warsh

President Donald Trump is gearing up to name a new Federal Reserve Chair this Friday, fresh off a private discussion with Kevin Warsh at the White House. Warsh, a former Fed Governor and vocal critic of recent Fed policies, is reported as a leading candidate to succeed Jerome Powell when his term ends in May.
Trump, speaking at the Kennedy Center, hinted at the announcement, describing his choice as someone who "could have been there a few years ago." This marks a notable shift since Warsh was once passed over in favor of Powell, a decision Trump has since second-guessed as Powell resisted the fast and steep rate cuts Trump wanted.
Warsh, who served from 2006 to 2011 and notably acted as Chair Ben Bernanke's main Wall Street liaison during the 2008 crisis, has criticized the Fed's approach to interest rates and inflation. He supports lowering rates more aggressively and advocates for a significant overhaul of the central bank's balance sheet and banking regulations.
Trump's pick is expected to align with his goal to ease monetary policy, contrasting with Powell's cautious approach which, despite three rate cuts in 2025, held steady on rates this week to defend inflation control efforts.
Adding complexity, Senator Thom Tillis has threatened to block any Fed nominations until an active Department of Justice investigation into Fed governance issues is resolved. This political pushback could complicate the confirmation process for Warsh or any nominee.
Warsh's deep Wall Street ties, including experience managing investments for notable figures linked to Trump supporters, put his independence under the microscope. Still, he is seen as a confidant of the president, appearing regularly at Trump's Florida estate and sharing his economic vision.
Other contenders in the running reportedly include Rick Rieder, BlackRock's CIO for fixed income; Fed Governor Christopher Waller; and White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, each bringing different policy stances to the table and sparking debate over the Fed's future direction.
With Powell declining to state whether he'll stay on as a Fed Governor past his chair term, the leadership dynamics at the Federal Reserve are set for significant upheaval. How Trump's pick will influence the Fed's policy stance on rates, inflation, and regulation remains to be seen once the nomination is officially announced.
