Truist Financial Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Truist reported Q1 2026 GAAP net income available to common shareholders of $1.4 billion, $1.09 per diluted share, a 25% YoY EPS increase. Performance was driven by commercial loan growth, strong noninterest income (notably Investment Banking & Trading and Wealth Management), disciplined expense control (250 bps YoY positive operating leverage) and modest credit metrics. Average loans rose ~0.7% sequentially to $327B, with commercial loans up and consumer loans down slightly; average deposits were up 0.7% sequentially with deposit costs easing. Net interest income guidance was trimmed to +2%–3% for 2026 (versus prior 3%–4%) due to the expectation that the fed funds rate will remain unchanged this year and competitive/ yield-seeking deposit dynamics; management still expects full-year NIM to finish above 2025’s average. The effective tax rate fell to 12.4% in Q1 (versus 17.9% a year ago) driven in part by client transaction activity in the project finance business; management now expects an effective tax rate near ~14.5% (16.5% taxable-equivalent) for 2026. Capital return accelerated: $1.1B of buybacks in Q1 and a new $5B repurchase target for 2026 (up from $4B). Truist re-affirmed short-term ROTCE goals (14% in 2026, 15% in 2027) and set a new long-term ROTCE target of 16%–18% over 3–5 years, reflecting confidence in fee growth, margin expansion, operational efficiency and expected capital framework changes. Asset quality remains sound (net charge-offs ~61 bps; NPLs 50 bps) and management provided expanded disclosure on its 12% NDFI loan portfolio, characterizing it as diversified and conservatively underwritten. Management emphasized continued investment in digital and AI to drive productivity, client engagement and operating leverage. Key risks: deposit competition and rate-path uncertainty that pressure NII, and quarter-to-quarter volatility in investment banking and trading revenues.
