Wells Fargo & Company Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Wells Fargo reported solid Q1 2026 results with diluted EPS up 15%, revenue +6% year-over-year, loans +11% and deposits +7%. Net interest income increased 5% YoY (but NIM compressed modestly quarter-to-quarter), while noninterest income rose 8% driven by broad-based business momentum: Consumer Banking & Lending and Commercial Banking revenue each +7%, Corporate & Investment Bank banking revenue +11% and markets revenue +19%, and Wealth & Investment Management +14%. The bank continues to invest in technology (including AI), marketing and talent while exercising expense discipline and reported 23 consecutive quarters of headcount reductions. Credit trends remain stable (net charge-off ratio ~45 bps) and management emphasized comfort with its nonbank financial institution (NDFI/private credit) exposures after deeper disclosures. Capital remains strong: CET1 10.3% (inside the 10–10.5% target) and the bank returned $5.4 billion to shareholders in the quarter (including $4.0 billion of buybacks). Management reiterated 2026 net interest income guidance of ~$50 billion (plus or minus), expects some further near-term margin compression driven by Markets balance sheet growth and interest-bearing deposit mix, but said loan growth could outpace prior assumptions if demand stays strong. Management is constructive on proposed Basel capital rule changes (initial estimate of ~7% RWA decline) and remains confident in achieving its medium-term ROTCE target (17–18%) through organic revenue growth, improved wealth/credit card profitability, Markets expansion and continued expense control.
