Jeff Bezos'' late acknowledgement of the devastating and deadly Amazon warehouse collapse was met with criticism on social media.
Rescuers were desperately searching for survivors early on Sunday after dozens of devastating tornadoes tore through six US states, leaving at least 83 people dead, dozens missing and towns in ruin. US President Joe Biden called the wave of tornadoes, including one that travelled more than 200 miles, one of the largest storm outbreaks in American history. It''s a tragedy, a shaken Biden, who pledged support for the affected states, said in televised comments. And we still don''t know how many lives are lost and the full extent of the damage. Scores of search and rescue officials were helping stunned citizens across the US heartland sift through the rubble of their homes and businesses overnight. More than 70 people are believed to have been killed in Kentucky alone, many of them workers at a candle factory, while at least six died in an Amazon warehouse in Illinois where they were on the night shift processing orders ahead of Christmas. This event is the worst, most devastating, most deadly tornado event in Kentucky''s history, said state Governor Andy Beshear, adding he fears we will have lost more than 100 people. The devastation is unlike anything I have seen in my life, and I have trouble putting it into words, he told reporters.

Over 70 killed as tornadoes rip through six US states

05:08am, Sunday, 12'th Dec 2021 Dawn.com
WASHINGTON: A devastating swarm of tornadoes ripped through six US states, killing more than 70 people in Kentucky and leaving a trail of destroyed homes and businesses along a path that stretched more than 200 miles, officials said on Saturday. At least four tornadoes touched down overnight in parts of Kentucky, causing significant damage in more than a dozen counties. The primary tornado travelled more than 365km across the state, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said. The death toll could exceed 100, the governor told a morning news conference. The level of devastation is unlike anything that I have ever seen, Beshear said. We were pretty sure that we would lose over 50 Kentuckians, Im now certain that that number is north of 70. It may in fact end up exceeding 100 before the day is done. He said 189 National Guard personnel have been deployed to assist with the emergency response. Some of the worst destruction was in Mayfield, a small city of about 10,000 people in the far western part of Kentucky, where the state converges with Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas.
Jeff Bezos on Saturday night said he was "heartbroken" over the deaths of at least six Amazon employees in an Illinois warehouse hit by a devastating tornado Friday.

At least six people were killed at an Amazon warehouse in Edwardsville, Illinois, after an EF3 tornado tracked through the area on December 10, authorities said. Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford said six people had been killed when the tornado caused severe damage to the building, trapping people inside. Whiteford said 45 people had survived and that crews were now solely focused on recovery. The National Weather Service said the worst damage from the tornado, carrying wind speeds of 155 mph (250 km/h), was just northeast of Pontoon Beach at the warehouse. Amazon founder and executive chairman Jeff Bezos said the Amazon team was heartbroken over the loss of our teammates and were committed to supporting the area through the crisis.
