Republican voting changes taken up by Wisconsin Senate

12:56am, Wednesday, 23'rd Feb 2022 Times Union
MADISON, Wis. (AP) The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Senate on Tuesday took up a package of fast-tracked voting changes introduced after former President Donald Trump''s defeat in 2020, measures that minority Democrats don''t have the votes to stop but that Gov. Tony Evers is expected to veto. Republicans also don''t have enough votes to override an Evers veto, making the votes this week largely about providing campaign fodder heading into November and setting the stage for what the Legislature in battleground Wisconsin may take up again next year. Evers, a Democrat, is running for reelection and Republican candidates seeking to take him on have said the 2020 election wasn''t conducted fairly, questioned President Joe Biden''s win and called for overhauling how future elections are run in the state. The proposals are part of a nationwide Republican effort to reshape elections following Bidens victory over Trump, who has falsely claimed the election was stolen. The measures come in the waning days of Wisconsin''s legislative session and could be sent to Evers by the Assembly on Thursday. Youre doing all of these things to tear down democracy, said Democratic Sen.

Delaware court upholds dismissal of Candace Owens lawsuit

11:17pm, Tuesday, 22'nd Feb 2022 Times Union
DOVER, Del. (AP) Delawares Supreme Court has upheld a judges dismissal of a lawsuit filed by conservative political commentator Candace Owens against USA Today and another media organization over fact-checking coronavirus posts she made on Facebook. After oral arguments two weeks ago, the court issued a two-paragraph order Tuesday affirming the July decision by Superior Court Judge Craig Karsnitz. Karsnitz said Owens had failed to state an actionable claim against USA Today or Lead Stories LLC, a Colorado-based entity. Lead Stories, like USA Today, is paid by Facebook to publish fact-check articles examining whether certain posts contain false information, according to the court ruling. Dozens of outside organizations, including The Associated Press, participate in Facebooks fact-checking program. Lead Stories published an article in April 2020 about a Facebook post in which Owens claimed the way government officials counted COVID-19 deaths overstated the pandemic''s scope and dangers.
Announcements claiming that former President Donald Trump''s new social media app, Truth Social, would be available for download on Monday proved to be technically true but did not facilitate much socializing, The Washington Post reported Tuesday. Per the Post , Truth Social "has been almost entirely inaccessible in the first days of its grand debut because of technical glitches, a 13-hour outage, and a 300,000-person waitlist." Just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the waitlist appeared to be 476,784 names long. The app itself looks very similar to Twitter, except the verification checkmarks are red, tweets and retweets are called "truths" and "retruths," and Trump isn''t banned . Developers said they had "stabilized the account creation process," putting an end to the long outage but not to the waitlist, according to the Post . Despite Trump''s frequent condemnations of Big Tech social media censorship and Section 230, the law which enables platforms to choose the content they host, his new social network relies heavily on both content moderation and Section 230.

Could Facebook Be Dead In The Water?

08:41pm, Tuesday, 22'nd Feb 2022 Benzinga
By Mike Rhodes, CEO of ConsultMyApp Since its launch nearly two decades ago, Facebook (NASDAQ: FB ) has become a media giant like no other - stretching to every corner of the globe and counting more than half of the entire population as users. The companys re-branding to Meta at the end of last year was supposed to be the next step in its evolution. However, a matter of months later and it has been anything but. In fact, the platform lost half a million active users in Q4 2021 its first decline in the companys history. On top of this, its financial results were so poor that shares fell 25 percent at one point, wiping $240 billion off its market value, which triggered a 2 percent drop in the Nasdaq Index.; If the social media giant does not manage to stem the flow of users off of the site soon, Meta (ironically Hebrew for dead) might well decide to pull the plug on Facebook as it shifts its focus to the Metaverse. The issue of user retention Since the emergence of the so-called Facebook Papers in September of 2021, the organization has been losing active users.
Meta Platforms Inc CEO Mark Zuckerberg should be required to answer questions about Facebook''s data privacy practices, the Washington, D.C., attorney general''s office argued in a new court filing stemming from a lawsuit the city filed in 2018 against the social media company.
