Putin sends forces to eastern Ukraine, seeks permission from lawmakers to use force outside Russia
05:43pm, Tuesday, 22'nd Feb 2022 Dawn.com
Russian lawmakers gave President Vladimir Putin permission to use military force outside the country on Tuesday, a move that could presage a broader attack on Ukraine after the US said an invasion was already underway there. Members of the upper house, the Federation Council, voted unanimously to allow Putin to use military force outside Russia effectively formalising a Russian military deployment to the rebel regions, where an eight-year conflict has killed nearly 14,000 people. Several European leaders said earlier in the day that Russian troops have moved into rebel-held areas in eastern Ukraine after Putin recognised their independence. But it was unclear how large the movements were. Putin had ordered the deployment of troops to two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine after recognising them as independent on Monday. A Reuters witness saw tanks and other military hardware moving through the separatist-controlled city of Donetsk after Putin formally recognised the breakaway regions and ordered the deployment of Russian forces to "keep the peace".

Ukraine and its Western allies have said Russian troops have been fighting in the region since the separatist conflict erupted in 2014. Moscow denies these allegations. White House terms Russian troop deployments ''invasion'' The White House on Tuesday began referring to Russian troop deployments in eastern Ukraine as an invasion after initially hesitating to use the term a red line that President Joe Biden has said would result in the US levying severe sanctions against Moscow. "We think this is, yes, the beginning of an invasion, Russia''s latest invasion into Ukraine," Jon Finer, principal deputy national security adviser, said in an interview on CNN . "An invasion is an invasion and that is what is underway." The White House decided to begin referring to Russia''s actions as an invasion because of the situation on the ground, according to a US official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.

Buying Russia...
03:32pm, Tuesday, 22'nd Feb 2022 Zero Hedge
Buying Russia Via AdventuresInCapitalism.com, Im going to keep this short because the situation is fluid. Besides, this one doesnt need much research or even deep thought. Its actually quite simple. Here are the facts; Biden tried to screw with Putin. Putin showed Biden that geopolitics is a game that only adults should play. Ball is now in Bidens court after Putin snagged 2 provinces that absolutely no one else wanted. What can Biden do? Maybe he can issue some more sanctions? Maybe he goes and cries to the UN?? Hes not going to start a war over these provinces. Biden has been had. What happens when the sanctions hit?? Ask yourself, where do palladium, nickel, natural gas, oil, uranium, grain, fertilizer and a bunch of other goods we depend upon come from?? Yeah, the guys that Biden wants to sanction. What do you think sanctions do to inflation? Theres an election coming up in November and it already looks like Biden gets steamrolled. Does he want to make it even worse?? Literally no one in Europe wants any part of this train-wreck that Biden started.

Buhari tasks gas exporting nations on adequate investment
02:20pm, Tuesday, 22'nd Feb 2022 BusinessDay
As world leaders embrace energy transition towards a low carbon future, President Muhammadu Buhari has charged members of the gas exporting countries forum on the need to promote investments and policies as critical tools in providing the necessary infrastructure to exploit the natural resource. Buhari made this call on Tuesday, at the 6th Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) summit of heads of state and government under the patronage of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar. Representing the president, the minister of state for petroleum resources, Timipre Sylva said with natural gas projected to be the leading fossil fuel in the energy transition, the forum was in the best position to provide stewardship and a credible platform to promote natural gas as a sustainable fuel for an effective energy transition. According to him, in this regard, technology and innovation, adequate investment, and policies would be critical in providing the necessary infrastructure to exploit the natural gas resources and deploy innovative carbon reduction technologies and mechanisms such as carbon capture & storage towards achieving a realistic greenhouse gas emissions reduction target. This will not be achieved without collaboration amongst us and building the capacity of the next generation of energy leaders.
German business confidence rises in February despite Ukraine tensions
01:10pm, Tuesday, 22'nd Feb 2022 Business Recorder
FRANKFURT: The German business climate improved again in February, survey data published Tuesday showed, despite the aggravation of the crisis in Ukraine and persistent supply chain issues. The Ifo institute''s closely watched indicator rose to 98.9 points from 96 in January, with companies reporting an improvement in their expectations for the near future. "The German economy is betting on an end to the coronavirus crisis," Ifo president Clemens Fuest said in a statement, after the government indicated it would roll back most of the health restrictions designed to contain the coronavirus pandemic by the end of March. High case numbers around the turn of the year depressed domestic demand, hitting services particularly hard, and were a factor behind the economy shrinking in the last quarter of 2021. The flagship manufacturing industries were also "clearly more satisfied", the Ifo said, though "material shortages continue to hamper production". Germany to enter recession due to virus: Bundesbank Bottlenecks in supply of raw materials and components have weighed heavily on Europe''s largest economy, which draws much of its strength from the export-stong sector.
