Several of these companies, symbols of American cultural influence in the world, have been the subject of boycott calls on social media as investors have also begun to ask questions about their presence. "We cannot ignore the needless human suffering unfolding in Ukraine," the fast-food giant said, announcing the temporary closure of all 850 restaurants in Russia, where it employs 62,000 people. Starbucks, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo announced their own decisions to halt or restrict business in quick succession, noting the growing human cost of the invasion. PepsiCo said that despite halting sales in Russia of its flagship beverage, as well as 7Up and Mirinda, it would continue to offer products like milk and baby food. "By continuing to operate, we will also continue to support the livelihoods of our 20,000 Russian associates and the 40,000 Russian agricultural workers in our supply chain," Ramon Laguarta, PepsiCo chief executive officer, said in a statement.

Putin''s military failures force bitter Russian reckoning
11:28am, Wednesday, 09'th Mar 2022 Axios
Vladimir Putin''s plan to seize Ukraine''s capital in the first two days of Russia''s invasion has been a complete failure, thrown off course by a fierce Ukrainian resistance, poor planning and a series of profound miscalculations. Why it matters: An isolated and angry Putin is expected to double down on his brutality as the war in Ukraine drags on for weeks, months or even years, according to top U.S. intelligence officials. It could be his undoing. Driving the news: "He has no sustainable political end game in the face of what is going to continue to be fierce resistance from the Ukrainians," CIA Director Bill Burns testified to a House committee Tuesday. Even if Russia eventually captures Kyiv, the U.S. intelligence community does not see a way that a pro-Russian puppet regime can stay in power given the Ukrainian people''s absolute refusal to capitulate. The U.S. estimates that between 2,000 and 4,000 Russian troops have already been killed, "far in excess" of what Putin anticipated or has admitted, Burns said.

Colbert tried a similarly courageous declaration, kind of. "Zelensky has begged the Western powers to ramp up the economic pain on Russia, and this morning, Joe Biden dished out the biggest dose yet ," Colbert said. "Take that, Vlad! America doesn''t need your kelpto-crude. America is perfectly happy to stay home and frack ourselves blind." Meanwhile, "more and more companies are saying nyet to doing business in Russia — the latest is McDonald''s," he said. "Yes, Russia just became a no-fry zone." "Today, McDonald''s announced that it was closing all 850 of its restaurants in Russia," Jimmy Fallon said on The Tonight Show. "Yeah, we don''t want their oil, and they can''t have our grease.
