Moderna Inc. disclosed that Chief Executive Stéphane Bancel''s 2021 salary got a 4.7% bump from the year before, while his total compensation jumped 41%, as he received the value of $3.75 million in stock awards his option awards increased 25% to $11.25 million. The increase in compensation comes as the biotechnology company grew revenue by 2,200% to $18.47 billion in 2021, due primarily to the launch of commercial sales of its COVID-19 vaccine, and as the stock soared 143%. In its 2021 proxy statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said Bancel''s base salary rose to $990,385 from $945,673 in 2020 and $921,217 in 2019, while his total compensation grew to $18.16 million from $12.86 million in 2020 and from $8.95 million in 2019. Bancel''s 2021 total comp included $1.5 million in non-equity incentive compensation and $665,354 in "all other compensation," which included $661,004 in security costs. While Bancel''s total comp has increased significantly during the pandemic, this 2021 total was still well below that of 2018, when it reached $58.61 million, including $55.94 million worth of option awards.

Shares of Moderna Inc. were down 1.9% in premarket trading on Thursday after the company said it began dosing patients in a Phase 2 clinical study assessing its experimental bivalent omicron-specific booster. This booster candidate has two components: an omicron-specific booster, and the COVID-19 vaccine, which is based on the original strain of the virus. "Our goal has been to remain ahead of the virus, and we are committed to generating and sharing data with public health authorities as they prepare for the fall booster season," Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel said in a news release. The study will enroll 375 adults at 20 sites in the U.S. Moderna is also testing a standalone omicron-specific booster candidate in a separate study.
