Executive Director, National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, The Federal Government will today (Friday) begin the administration of booster doses of COVID-19 vaccines. The Executive Director of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Faisal Shuaib, stated this on Thursday in Abuja as the Africa Centre for Disease Control, an agency of the African Union, kicked against the introduction of booster doses in African countries. Nigeria had on March 5,2021 commenced COVID-19 vaccination with a total of 3.94 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine from the COVAX institute of India. This was followed by a vaccination break due to the ban of vaccine transportation by the Serum Institute of India, the main supplier to the COVAX facility. In August, Nigeria resumed her second phase of vaccine with donations of moderna and AstraZeneca vaccines which were received through donations from foreign countries. The country also received several doses of the J and J vaccine which it procured through a joint partnership with other African Union countries through the AVATT facility.

US expands Pfizer COVID boosters for children

07:01am, Friday, 10'th Dec 2021 Jamaica Observer
WASHINGTON, United States (AP) - United States health authorities said yesterday that 16 and 17 year olds should get a booster dose of Pfizer''s COVID-19 vaccine once they''re six months past their last shot. The US and many other nations already were urging adults to get booster shots to pump up immunity that can wane months after vaccination, calls that intensified with the discovery of the worrisome new Omicron variant. Yesterday, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave emergency authorisation for 16 and 17 year olds to get a third dose of the vaccine made by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech. And hours later, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) lifted the last barrier - saying those teens should get their booster as soon as it''s time. Boosters are important considering that protection against infection wanes over time and "we''re facing a variant that has the potential to require more immunity to be protected," Dr Rochelle Walensky, CDC''s director, told The Associated Press.

Why you should get your COVID booster shot

02:26am, Friday, 10'th Dec 2021 AlterNet
by Cyra Patel , Australian National University ; Jean Li-Kim-Moy , University of Sydney , and Robert Booy , University of Sydney If its been six months since you got the second COVID vaccine dose, its time to book in for your booster shot. This will provide additional protection against COVID, including the new Omicron variant. While the evidence is still emerging, preliminary data suggests a Pfizer booster might give the same protection against Omicron as double-dose vaccination did for the original strain. Why get a booster? When you get your first dose of COVID vaccine, your body produces an immune response against a part of the virus called the spike protein. If youre exposed to the SARS-CoV-2 virus, your immune system can recognise and fight the virus quickly. The immune response to a single dose of COVID vaccine is generally short-lived. So a second dose is needed to have a stronger and longer-lasting response. Over time, the amount of antibodies in your body decreases this is referred to as waning immunity.
