Children''s Place beats on profit but sales miss

Children''s Place Inc. reported fourth-quarter net income of $39.0 million, or $2.68 per share, up from $7.8 million, or 53 cents per share, last year. Adjusted EPS of $3.02 beat the FactSet consensus of $2.85. Sales of $507.8 million were up from $472.9 million last year and missed the FactSet consensus for $532.8 million. Comparable sales were up 13.3%. "We are facing significant headwinds in 2022 including decade-high cotton pricing, record inflation, lapping unprecedented stimulus payments from last year, and continued global freight disruptions," said Chief Executive Jane Elfers in a statement. However, the company has undergone a digital transformation that Elfers said will help the company exceed pre-pandemic EPS levels. Children''s Place has closed 256 stores since the start of the pandemic, and plans to shutter another 40 stores in fiscal 2022. The company has 672 stores operating. Children''s Place stock jumped 5.2% in Wednesday premarket trading, and has tumbled almost 30% for the last year.
