Criminologist McKay thinks national SOE would be better
07:01am, Sunday, 28'th Nov 2021 Jamaica Observer
Criminologist Dr Jason McKay prefers the imposition of a national state of emergency (SOE) instead of concentrating the anti-crime activity on geographical regions. McKay, who is also a Sunday Observer columnist, said that such a move would mean that it would be harder for criminals to escape the dragnet of the security forces. Forty-eight people have been killed since Prime Andrew Holness declared SOEs in seven police divisions two weeks ago. Speaking alongside Holness during a virtual press conference to announce the SOEs on Sunday, November 14, Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson said the island had recorded 1,240 murders as at Friday, November 11. Up to Friday, November 20, 1,288 people had been murdered. Dr McKay, CEO of McKay Security, told the Jamaica Observer that given the current crime predicament, the most ideal thing to do would be declaring a national SOE. "The solution, really, is a national SOE where the power of arrest is islandwide and detention is islandwide.

Tokyo shares close higher
07:21am, Thursday, 25'th Nov 2021 Business Recorder
TOKYO: Tokyo shares closed higher Thursday after solid US indicators boosted Wall Street shares with a rising dollar also encouraging investors. The Nikkei 225 index added 0.67 percent, or 196.62 points, to end at 29,499.28, while the broader Topix index advanced 0.33 percent, or 6.57 points, to 2,025.69. The dollar was at 115.40 yen, compared with 115.41 yen in New York late Wednesday, maintaining gains made since Tuesday when the US currency broke the 115 yen mark for the first time in more than four years. Market sentiment was also boosted by fresh, stronger-than-expected US indicators, including consumer data and jobless claims that hit the lowest level for over five decades. The S&P ended close to a new record finish although the Dow edged down, but it was enough to send the Tokyo market higher at the open. The dollar''s rise was also encouraging buying of exporters, such as automakers and semiconductor related issues, analysts said. Investors bought high-tech issues in Tokyo after US technology shares gained overnight, Okasan Online Securities said in a note. "But traders were in a wait-and-see mode ahead of Thanksgiving," it added.

Making EV the ride of the future
09:34am, Wednesday, 24'th Nov 2021 The Sun Daily
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corp (MGTC) is targeting to install 10,000 charging stations for electric vehicles (EV) in the country as EV is the primary means to reduce carbon emission, according to its CEO Tan Sri Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor. The nation is working on migrating from internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) to EV even though EV is using electricity generated by coal-fired plant now, he said during the panel discussion entitled Repowering a Nation Towards a Sustainable Future at the virtual Invest Malaysia Series 4 this week. He is confident that once the countrys renewable energy installed capacity has reached its 40% target, or 18,000 megawatts, by 2035, the public will show a higher willingness to EV. EV is the way forward to decarbonisation and we encourage the public to move to EV as soon as possible. By 2030, 100% of the government fleet will be EV. We have installed more than 400 charging stations across Malaysia including Sarawak.
