On Tuesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made a virtual appearance at The Wall Street Journals CEO Summit where he called for the government to end subsidies for something that might seem surprisingelectric cars. But that opposition to supporting a product sold by his own company seems a lot less puzzling when expressed in these terms: Now that he has climbed to the top, Musk is extremely anxious to burn the ladder below him. The Build Back Better bill which passed the House and is now under consideration in the Senate, with hopes of final passage before the end of the year, provides as much as $12,500 in incentives for the purchase of an electric vehicle. That bill would also provide monies for building out the charging infrastructure that give consumers the confidence to replace gas-powered vehicles with electric alternatives as their primary means of getting around. But Musk is against both of those things. In fact, he calls for an end to all government subsidies which is a quite a statement considering that Tesla built its business on subsidized vehicles.

Gordon Johnson: Tesla Just Posted Its Second Straight Sequential Decline In Shanghai Sales Numbers Gordon Johnson of GLJ Research is out with a note on Wednesday morning stating that Tesla missed the consensus estimate of 57,800 sales in China for November. His note says that CPCA data reported that Tesla posted sales of 52,859 units, which break down to 31,732 domestic deliveries and 21,127 vehicles made in China and exported to the rest of the world. Johnson notes that this is the second consecutive month sales out of the Shanghai plant declined. The sequential decline comes "despite higher production in each of the past two months and this is despite rebates TSLA offered at the beginning of Nov. to move cars," Johnson wrote. Tesla also lagged in gaining market share behind the "Big 3" in China, his note says: "While TSLA did see 411bps of share gains in the domestic Chinese NEV auto market month-over-month, the ''Big 3'' saw their market share jump by 495bps MoM." The miss in total numbers Johnson attributes to a "big miss in exports", where Tesla saw 21,100 cars exported versus estimates of 28,200 vehicles.
