US stock futures kicked off Tuesday on an upbeat note, with the Nasdaq-100 futures taking the lead, jumping about 1.3%. The semiconductor sector is back in the spotlight, lighting a fire under tech shares as traders gear up for a packed week of earnings announcements from major technology firms.

Dow Jones futures inched 0.3% higher while S&P 500 futures added 0.5%, recovering from yesterday's dip triggered by escalating conflict in the US-Iran region. Semiconductors are a hot theme again, following a tentative rally earlier this week. Meanwhile, Asian markets mirrored this enthusiasm; South Korea's KOSPI Composite surged over 2%, largely boosted by chip manufacturers.

Nvidia NVDA caught some pre-market attention, edging up after revealing it has taken a stake in neocloud company Nebius. This move seems to have added some gloss to AI and chip sector optimism, which helped counterbalance jitters over fresh US trade policy shifts and geopolitical unrest in the Middle East.

Speaking of trade, President Trump announced an aggressive 50% tariff on a broad basket of Canadian imports, including everyday items like beer and hockey sticks plus industrial chemicals. This could escalate tensions between the US and Canada, reviving memories of tit-for-tat trade spats. However, Canadian oil imports are spared the tariffs, which is noteworthy given oil prices are flirting with their highest levels since mid-June.

Oil prices cooled slightly Tuesday morning despite ongoing Middle East tensions pushing Brent crude close to $90 a barrel. The sector's resilience adds another layer of complexity for markets navigating geopolitical and trade uncertainties.

Today's earnings calendar features heavyweight industrial and energy firms such as General Motors GM, Halliburton HAL, and 3M MMM. Investors are now bracing for the tech earnings sprint later this week, especially eyeing Alphabet GOOG/GOOGL, with a keen focus on their AI investment plans.

On the data front, the ADP employment gauge showed a modest rise of 19,750 jobs for the week ended July 4, while the Philadelphia Fed's non-manufacturing activity index slipped further into contraction territory at -25.8 in July, underscoring a cautious economic sentiment.

Adding to the day's earnings spotlight are Novartis NVS, Charles Schwab SCHW, Danaher DHR, Chubb CB, and a roster of financial and industrial companies, all releasing results that might shake up sectors beyond tech.

With markets digesting everything from tariffs and Middle East flare-ups to semiconductor sector revival and data signals, the scene is set for some interesting moves. How long the chip optimism can sustain itself amid the geopolitical noise remains to be seen.
