Fairfax Financial Holdings Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q2 2026
Fairfax reported a strong Q2 2026 driven by solid operating and investment results. Key financials: operating income from insurance and reinsurance (adjusted, undiscounted, before risk margin) was $1.1 billion; underwriting income was $459 million (vs. $427M a year ago); interest and dividend income rose to $737 million; net investment gains were $769 million; net earnings for the quarter were $1.4 billion and $2.1 billion year-to-date. Book value per share was $1,304 at quarter-end, up 4.8% year-to-date (adjusted for the $15 dividend). Management executed significant transactions: sale of half its Poseidon stake (realized pre-tax gain $838M), privatization of Kennedy-Wilson via a consortium (Fairfax invested cash and contributed existing holdings), and announced privatization of Andrew Peller and Sleep Country’s acquisition of Sleep Number. Fairfax repurchased shares (680k in the quarter) and continues to hold equity total return swaps. Insurance operations wrote $9.4 billion gross premium (+4.1% YoY) with a combined ratio of 93.1% and favorable reserve development of $152 million. International premiums grew strongly (notably Fairfax Asia +26%), now representing ~21% of gross premium (with broader international business closer to ~35%). Investment portfolio totaled $77.3 billion: predominantly high-quality fixed income ($52.3B, >75% government bonds, duration ~2 years, yield ~5%), $25B in equity/equity-like exposures with a target return of 15%, and $11.6B in associates/consolidated investments. Management emphasized disciplined underwriting in a softening (especially property) insurance market, diversification across geographies/lines, conservative reserve setting, healthy liquidity at the holding company ($2.3B cash and investments plus undrawn $2B revolver) and opportunistic, long-term investment approach. They noted near-term volatility in associate earnings (one-offs and mark-to-market effects) but remain positive on long-term prospects. Key risks called out include rate/market volatility, geopolitical issues (conflict in Iran impacting Gulf operations), inflation risk, and continued softening/competition in North American property markets.
