Corning Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Corning reported strong Q1 2026 results: sales +18% YoY to $4.35B, EPS +30% to $0.70, operating margin 20.2%, gross margin 39.1%, ROIC 13.5%, and free cash flow $188M. Performance was driven by Optical Communications (enterprise and carrier demand, large multiyear agreements with hyperscalers) and a rapidly scaling Solar platform (polysilicon, wafer and module operations). Management will upgrade and extend its Springboard growth plan at an investor event on May 6 (now planning through 2030). Optical demand (including Gen AI products and fiber-to-the-home) is driving capacity expansion plans and long-term supply agreements where Corning and customers share risk and investment. Solar ramp shows meaningful revenue contribution (Q1 solar sales +80% YoY) but wafer ramp issues require an extended maintenance shutdown; Q2 guidance assumes an incremental ~$30M of expense related to transitioning to permanent utility systems and equipment repairs/upgrades. Q2 guidance: revenue ~ $4.6B (+~14% YoY) and EPS $0.73–$0.77 (+~25% YoY). Management reiterated capital allocation priorities: invest in high-return organic growth, use customer funding and risk-sharing to finance expansions, maintain a strong balance sheet, continue dividends and prioritize share buybacks for returning excess cash. New reporting segments introduced (Solar as standalone; Glass Innovations combining Display & Specialty Materials).
