Genie Energy Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Genie Energy reported mixed Q1 2026 results: record quarterly revenue ($142M) but weaker profitability due to commodity-driven margin compression early in the quarter and higher investment in customer acquisition and new business initiatives. Management lowered full-year 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance to $32.5M–$40M (from $40M–$50M). GRE (retail energy) saw margins hurt by extreme cold in Jan–Feb but recovered in March; GRE added 84,000 new retail customers in Q1, ending March with 354,000 RCEs and 364,000 meters, and management expects GRE to be cash generative for the rest of the year assuming normalized wholesale markets. GREW (new ventures) revenue grew (partly from liquidating solar panel inventory) but profitability declined due to write-downs and higher investment in early-stage initiatives (notably Roded, which is scaling production). Balance sheet remains strong with ~$200M in cash, equivalents and marketable securities and only $6.8M of debt. Management expects GREW initiatives to require lower incremental investment by year-end and anticipates improving margins through 2026, though near-term results reflect deliberate growth spending.
