Japan Airlines Company JAL Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Japan Airlines (JAL) delivered a strong Q1 with consolidated revenues of JPY471 billion (up >10% YoY) and EBIT of JPY45.5 billion — more than double last year and the highest-ever Q1 EBIT. Performance was driven by robust international passenger demand, domestic demand stimulation, cargo expansion (added a third freighter and new routes), and continued strength at LCCs (ZIPAIR, SPRING JAPAN). Q1 beat the company plan by roughly JPY18 billion on an EBIT basis (about +JPY10 billion revenue, +JPY7 billion cost reductions), with the full-service carrier segment accounting for most of the outperformance (international +JPY12bn, domestic +JPY5bn). Fuel costs were controlled (Singapore kerosene down ~19% YoY) and FX moved mildly favorable; excluding market conditions, operational improvements contributed ~JPY16.3 billion of the EBIT uplift. Unit revenues improved overall (net unit price ex-surcharge expected to rise in Q2 for international), though domestic unit price pressure remains amid competitive leisure promotions. JAL expects Q2 to be largely in line with plan and reiterates its FY target of JPY200 billion EBIT as achievable, while noting remaining market uncertainties. Balance sheet and cash flow are healthy: cash & equivalents ~JPY950.2 billion, capital adequacy ~38.7%, negative net debt-to-equity, and positive free cash flow (JPY56.7 billion) in Q1.
