Matson Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Matson reported mixed first-quarter 2026 results with strength in Ocean Transportation driven by stronger-than-expected freight demand out of China after Lunar New Year, and weakness in Logistics mainly from lower supply-chain management contributions. Key operating points: China volumes were down year-over-year in Q1 but rebounded post-Lunar New Year with strength across e-commerce, e-goods and garments, air-to-ocean conversions and growth into Southeast Asia; management expects Q2 China volumes to be higher year-over-year and now forecasts full-year 2026 consolidated operating income to modestly exceed 2025. Domestic lanes: Hawaii volumes declined (~5.6% YoY) and are expected to be roughly flat for the year; Alaska and Guam volumes were roughly flat-to-down modestly and are expected to be comparable to 2025 for the full year. SSAT JV contribution and Logistics operating income were lower in Q1, and Logistics is expected to approach 2025 levels for the year. Fuel price volatility tied to geopolitical events (Iran conflict) is expected to cause a near-term headwind in Q2 due to a timing lag in surcharge recovery, but management expects to fully recover fuel costs by year-end (most recovery in Q3). Financials and capital allocation: consolidated operating income was $61.4M in Q1; net income $56.6M, EPS $1.85; strong cash flows (trailing 12 months CFO $552.1M); Q1 share repurchases of ~400k shares ($54.4M); cumulative repurchases ~14.2M shares ($1.3B) and company added 3M shares to repurchase authorization. CapEx guide: maintenance $150–170M; newbuild milestone payments ~ $400M for 2026 (CCF + cash cover ~93%+ of remaining obligations), cash and CCF together exceed remaining newbuild obligations. Debt was reduced to $351.1M at quarter end. Outlook: Q2 consolidated operating income expected ~ $20M above prior year (inclusive of Q2 fuel lag), full-year consolidated operating income now expected to modestly exceed 2025; D&A, interest, tax rate and dry-docking expectations provided. Primary risks called out: fuel-price volatility and surcharge timing, trade/tariff shocks or geopolitical disruptions.
