Peoples Bancorp Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Peoples Bancorp reported Q1 2026 diluted EPS of $0.81, slightly ahead of consensus ($0.80). Net interest margin expanded 4 basis points quarter-over-quarter, helped by lower deposit costs and a reduction in brokered CDs, while net interest income declined modestly due to lower accretion income and fewer days in the quarter. Loan balances grew $13 million (notably C&I +$111M) while construction/CRE, premium finance and leases declined. Noninterest-bearing deposits increased $41M (3%), improving the loan-to-deposit ratio to 88.5%. Credit: provision for credit losses was $9.7M (driven by macroeconomic model changes) and the allowance rose to 1.16% of loans; nonperforming loans and criticized/classified loans improved; Q1 annualized net charge-off rate improved to 40 bps (small-ticket lease charge-offs were $3.8M). Capital and shareholder returns: tangible equity to tangible assets rose to 8.91%, book value per share and tangible book value per share increased, and the quarterly dividend was raised to $0.42 (11th consecutive annual increase) implying a ~4.84% yield. Transaction: management announced a definitive merger agreement to acquire Citizens National Corporation (~$700M assets, 12 branches in KY) for ~ $77M in value (2.1 shares + $8 cash). Management expects the deal to be accretive (tangible book earn-back in under one year, ~$0.20 EPS accretion in 2027) and to realize ~40% cost saves (about half of savings realized in 2026 and the rest in early 2027). The deal is expected to close around late Q3/early Q4 2026 with conversion in Q2 2027, subject to customary approvals. Guidance/forward commentary: management reiterated expectations for positive operating leverage in 2026, provided NIM sensitivity (roughly 3–4 bps impact per 25 bps Fed move), expects fee-based income and noninterest expense ranges for the year, sees loan growth toward the low end of its 3–5% guidance (given payoff timing and macro uncertainty), and anticipates a modest decline in net charge-offs for 2026 versus 2025.
