RLI Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q3 2025
RLI reported strong Q3 2025 results driven by disciplined underwriting, favorable reserve development and higher investment income. Operating earnings were $0.83 per share (GAAP $1.35), with a consolidated combined ratio of ~85 (85.1 reported) versus ~89.6 a year ago. Book value per share rose ~26% year-to-date, delivering greater than 20% ROE year-to-date. Property posted an exceptionally strong quarter (60 combined ratio) despite an 11% decline in gross premium, aided by an unusually benign U.S. hurricane season and favorable prior-year reserve development. Casualty grew (premiums +8%) but had a higher combined ratio (~98) with favorable reserve releases helping results; surety premiums were down modestly with an 85 combined ratio. Investment portfolio contributed meaningfully as markets rallied, allowing asset purchases at attractive yields (avg. 4.8% on recent buys). Management emphasized continued discipline amid a softening property/cat market, selective growth where rate and terms are adequate, and ongoing investments in underwriting, claims, technology (including targeted generative AI use cases) and people to sustain long-term profitable growth. Key near-term risks/opportunities include competitive pressure and new capital entering property catastrophe and other lines, reinsurance renewal dynamics, potential midterm policy shopping/cancellations in transportation, and the potential for market re-pricing if storm activity or reinsurance costs change. RLI reiterated a focus on profitability over volume, strong balance sheet flexibility, and leveraging relationships and service as competitive advantages.
