Fresh security probe threatens NVIDIAs Arm takeover
10:19am, Monday, 15'th Nov 2021 Business Weekly
The UK government is ordering fresh security checks on US tech giant NVIDIAs proposed takeover of Cambridge superchip architect Arm. It says the further probe is necessary on national security grounds but has not explained why. Digital and Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries is set to order the Competition & Markets Authority to trigger a fresh probe of the deal this week. Cambridge and the UK will lose billions of pounds of investment in advanced technology if the Government bows to pressure mainly from US and Asian tech companies to block the deal, whose worth has already risen from the opening bid price of $40 billion to around $54bn. Regardless of logic it is bowing to demands from US and Asian companies such as Apple, Qualcomm, Samsung and others to block the deal on anti-trust and national security grounds. Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics and Apple for example produce their own processors and fear an Arm-NVIDIA power play will impact their businesses. NVIDIA has already launched Cambridge-1, the UK''s most powerful supercomputer, which will enable top scientists and healthcare experts to use the powerful combination of AI and simulation to accelerate the digital biology revolution and bolster the country''s world-leading life sciences industry.

Spring integrates with Instagram to allow creators to keep 100% of sales profits
09:36am, Monday, 15'th Nov 2021 Business of Apps
Spring, the commerce platform for creators, just partnered with Instagram to help creators achieve a 100% profit from their merchandise. Costs for goods, manufacturing and shipping would be eliminated and creators can check their transactions in-app. Its essentially a great way to bypass Apples hefty 30% fee cut because the commerce integration is direct to consumer. The Spring program can be used with Instagram posts, reels and Shops and will be available to its 350k creators. 100 per cent profit is honestly insane. Nobody can compete with that, and it makes me feel so much better about releasing a high quality product to my fans. The seamless integration makes the purchase incredibly easy for my fans. They dont even have to leave the app, commented The post Spring integrates with Instagram to allow creators to keep 100% of sales profits appeared first on Business of Apps .

Apple offers $30 million to settle off-the-clock bag search controversy
08:48am, Monday, 15'th Nov 2021 Engadget
Last year, California''s supreme court ruled that Apple broke the law by failing to pay employees while the waited for mandatory bag and iPhone searches, Apple Insider has reported. Now, Apple has offered to pay $30 million to settle the suit and lawyers for the employees have urged them to accept it. "This is a significant, non-reversionary settlement reached after nearly eight years of hard-fought litigation," wrote plaintiff attorney Lee Shalov in the proposed settlement seen by Courthouse News . Employees launched the suit way back in 2013, saying they weren''t paid while being searched for stolen merchandise or trade secrets. The workers felt they were still under Apple''s "control" during that five to 20 minute process and should therefore be compensated. Apple in turn argued that the employees could choose not to bring their bags or iPhones, thus avoiding a search in the first place. Apple won an earlier battle in district court, but the case went to the California Supreme Court on appeal.
