Microsoft''s Stock Valuation And Baseball Authored by Michael Lebowitz via RealInvestmentAdvice.com, Over the last few years, investors have bid up prices of some stocks to historical valuations. Many of these investors are speculating on price and have little appreciation of underlying fundamentals. Microsoft’s historic stock valuation in the late 90s can teach us valuable lessons about the difference between speculating and adhering to a fundamental framework. Today we see Tesla (TSLA) shareholders, as an example, believing they are getting in on the rookie year of the next 18-year-old Hank Aaron. Given what they believe is massive upside, they harbor little concern about today’s prices or valuations. For those investors blind to valuations and playing the hot hand, we wish you luck. But, for the rest of you, we look back at a young Microsoft (MSFT), the Babe Ruth of the equity market. Microsoft’s stock valuation in the late 1990s can teach us a valuable lesson about managing money in times of extreme valuations. “ People who run ball clubs think in terms of buying players.

There are several different ways investors make money in the financial markets. One way that is not found as often in the daily headlines is risk/merger arbitrage. This strategy attempts to profit from the narrowing of the gap in the price of a company being acquired and the acquirer''s valuation of that stock in a potential takeover deal. There are several different components to the calculation that are adjusted on a daily basis. This investment strategy will be profitable if and when the deal becomes official. Yet the multifaceted formula changes when there is an “all cash” deal on the table. Under these circumstances, the difference between the proposed takeover price and the target''s actual price may indicate the amount of skepticism of the deal proposed being completed. The Proposed Deal: The above scenario applies to Microsoft Corp''s (NASDAQ: MSFT ) attempt to take over Activision Blizzard Inc. Stocks soared at the open Tuesday after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow had begun to withdraw some troops from the Ukrainian border – raising hopes that military conflict between the two countries might yet be avoided. SEE MORE The 12 Best Financial Stocks to Buy for 2022 "Ukraine headlines continue to drive the day-to-day volatility," says Michael Reinking, senior market strategist for the New York Stock Exchange. "As there are reports of some Russian troop withdrawal, there is an unwind of much of the movement seen across financial markets over the last few days." This included a big drop in energy stocks , which fell 1.1% as U.S. crude futures retreated from seven-year highs (declining 3.6% to end at $92.07 per barrel). On the other hand, technology was the biggest gainer today – jumping 2.6% – on news that Intel ( INTC , +1.8%) is buying Israeli chip manufacturer Tower Semiconductor ( TSEM , +42.1%) for roughly $5.4 billion. "While we have no incremental knowledge as to the validity of these reports, we would not be surprised to see INTC taking such a step to bolster its foundry aspirations," says Deutsche Bank analyst Ross Seymore (Hold). "We expect to learn more about the company''s foundry strategy at its upcoming analyst meeting on Feb. 17, regardless of if Tower is part of those plans." Also in focus today was the latest inflation update, with the Labor Department reporting the producer price index – which measures how much suppliers are charging businesses for goods – rose a seasonally adjusted 1% month-over-month in January.
