Heavily mutated Omicron variant puts Companies on alert, It''s a variant of concern

01:46pm, Sunday, 28'th Nov 2021 News Track Live (English)
New Delhi: In South Africa, Omicron, a new corona infection subtype, has developed. It has sparked fear throughout the world. According to the information so far, the new variant is also capable of beating the corona vaccination. Many scientists have also warned that if new corona variations emerge, the vaccination would need to be modified as well. With the emergence of the omicron, efforts to develop a vaccine for it have accelerated. Novavax, a firm based in the United States, said that it has begun developing a vaccine to combat new strains. The vaccine will also be available for testing and manufacture in the coming weeks, according to the firm. The business claims to be developing a spike protein that would boost immunity against the new variety B.1.1.529. This week, a novel Corona B.1.1529 strain was discovered in South Africa. The World Health Organization (WHO) labelled it as "alarming" on Friday, using the term "variant of concern" to describe it. ''Omicron'' is the name given to it.
A new, potentially more contagious variant of the coronavirus is already circulating in Europe. A number of countries have banned the entry of passengers from southern Africa, where the Omicron variant was found, in the past two days. Britain, Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic yesterday identified the first cases of people infected with this variant and announced new measures to control the infection. Fears of the new variant and the potential for it to be more resistant to the protection provided by vaccines are raising concerns that the pandemic and related lockdowns and restrictions may last longer than expected. Nearly two years after the start of the pandemic, which claimed the lives of more than 5 million people globally, countries around the world are on the alert. On Friday, a number of countries banned flights from South Africa and neighboring countries to allow time to assess whether this option is more contagious than the currently dominant Delta option. The Republic of South Africa regretted the closure of the borders of dozens of countries for its citizens and travelers and said that the discovery of the new version of Omicron coronavirus thanks to the work of South African scientists should not be "punished" in this way. "This latest series of travel bans is actually punishing South Africa for its progress in genomic sequencing and its ability to discover new variants more quickly.
An outlier in the U.S. pharmaceutical industrys vaccine wars, one which uses a totally different technology than the current gene therapy vaccines sold by Moderna, Pfizer, and Johnson & Johnson, says it will have a vaccine ready for testing and manufacturing ready in the next several weeks, according to reports. Covid omicron variant spreads to more countries as world on alert

07:12am, Sunday, 28'th Nov 2021 The Malta Independent
The new potentially more contagious omicron variant of the coronavirus popped up in more European countries on Saturday, just days after being identified in South Africa, leaving governments around the world scrambling to stop the spread. The U.K. on Saturday tightened its rules on mask-wearing and on testing of international arrivals after finding two cases. New cases were confirmed Saturday in Germany and Italy, with Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong also reporting that the variant has been found in travellers. In the U.S., Dr. Anthony Fauci, the governments top infectious diseases expert, said he would not be surprised if the omicron variant was already in the United States, too. We have not detected it yet, but when you have a virus that is showing this degree of transmissibility it almost invariably is ultimately going to go essentially all over, Fauci said on NBC television. Because of fears that the new variant has the potential to be more resistant to the protection offered by vaccines, there are growing concerns around the world that the pandemic and associated lockdown restrictions will persist for far longer than hoped.
Novavax added it has already started creating a COVID-19 vaccine based on the known genetic sequence of B.1.1.529 and will have it ready to begin testing and manufacturing within the next few weeks. High alert: World scurries to contain new COVID variant; cases detected in Europe

12:15pm, Saturday, 27'th Nov 2021 The Malta Independent
With each passing hour, new restrictions were being slapped on travel from countries in southern Africa as the world scurried Saturday to contain a new variant of the coronavirus that has the potential to be more resistant to the protection offered by vaccines. A host of countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada Iran, Japan, Thailand and the United States, joined others, including the European Union and the U.K. in impose restrictions on southern African countries in response to warnings over the transmissability of the new variant against the advice of the World Health Organization. Despite the shutdown of flights, there was increasing evidence that the variant is already spreading. Cases have been reported in travelers in Belgium, Israel and Hong Kong, and Germany also has a probable case. Dutch authorities are checking for the new variant after 61 passengers on two flights from South Africa tested positive for COVID-19. The global health body has named the new variant omicron, labeling it a variant of concern because of its high number of mutations and some early evidence that it carries a higher degree of infection than other variants.

Black Friday Turns Red On "Terrible News" - Global Markets Crater On "Nu Variant" Panic The Friday after thanksgiving is called black Friday because that''s when retailers finally turn profitable for the year. Not so much for market, however, because this morning it''s red as far as the eye can see. The culprit: the same one we discussed late last night - the emergence of a new coronavirus strain detected in South Africa, known as B.1.1.529, which reportedly carries an "extremely high number" of mutations and is “clearly very different” from previous incarnations, which may drive further waves of disease by evading the body’s defenses according to South African scientists, and soon, Anthony Fauci. British authorities think it is the most significant variant to date and have hurried to impose travel restrictions on southern Africa, as did Japan, the Czech Republic and Italy on Friday. The European Union also said it aimed to halt air travel from the region. "Markets have been quite complacent about the pandemic for a while, partly because economies have been able to withstand the impact of selective lockdown measures.
