Navient Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
Navient reported Q1 2026 results inline with its full-year outlook, driven by strong loan origination growth, improving credit trends and meaningful expense reductions. Refinance originations grew 65% year-over-year ($778M) with new-loan average FICO of 775, while total originations rose over 60% YoY. In-school (graduate) originations were $40M as the company prepares for a larger peak season opportunity following changes to federal Grad PLUS programs. Credit performance improved across private and FFELP portfolios (31+ day and 91+ day delinquencies declined), though legacy private delinquency/charge-off rates remain above long-term norms and management expects further improvement. Core earnings per share were $0.20; core operating expenses were $89M (a 30% YoY improvement) and the company reiterates its $350M expense target for 2026. Navient completed securitizations ($683M refi and $550M in-school), repurchased $23M of shares in the quarter (2.3M shares at $9.91 average), and returned $38M to shareholders via buybacks and dividends. Adjusted tangible equity ratio remained strong at 8.9%. Leadership will change: CEO David Yowan will step down and Ed Bramson will become CEO in a few weeks. Management remains cautious on macro/geopolitical risks but confident in funding capacity and execution on in-school/graduate lending and ongoing product tests (personal loans).
