NBT Bancorp Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
NBT Bancorp reported solid first quarter 2026 results driven by disciplined balance-sheet management, revenue diversification and integration benefits from the May 2025 Evans Bancorp acquisition. Key financials: net income of $51.1 million ($0.98 diluted EPS), a 27% YoY earnings increase, operating ROA of 1.29% and ROTCE of 15.5%. Tangible book value per share was $27.05, up >9% YoY. Net interest margin improved 28 bps YoY to 3.72% this quarter (up 7 bps sequentially) as management reduced funding costs faster than asset yields repriced. Total loans were essentially flat sequentially ($11.5B) with planned runoff in residential solar and elevated commercial payoffs; management expects low- to mid-single-digit loan growth for the year. Deposits rose $244M sequentially (seasonal municipal inflows) and the deposit mix shifted toward low/no-cost checking and savings (59% of deposits). Noninterest income grew 4.5% YoY; retirement plan services reached an all-time quarterly revenue high and fee businesses remain a multi-year growth focus. Operating expenses were $112M (roughly Q1 run rate expected into Q2), with annual operating expense growth targeted ~3–4% for 2026. Asset quality saw modest deterioration driven by a handful of commercial relationships; reserves remain about 1.2% of loans covering >2x NPLs. Capital priorities remain focused on organic growth, annual dividend growth and opportunistic share repurchases (250,000 shares repurchased in Q1). Management highlighted ongoing M&A conversations targeted at fill-in opportunities within the existing 7-state footprint (priority markets: greater Rochester/Finger Lakes and southern New Hampshire/Maine) and noted increasing commercial activity tied to semiconductor and advanced-manufacturing projects in Upstate NY.
