Freightcar America Earnings Call Transcript Summary of Q1 2026
FreightCar America reported Q1 2026 results generally in line with expectations and reiterated full-year guidance while emphasizing a back-half-weighted revenue cadence. Revenue declined to $64.3M (Q1 2025: $96.3M) driven by lower railcar deliveries (577 vs. 710). Backlog at quarter end was ~2,058 units (~$156M), diversified across new builds, conversions and retrofit programs. Aftermarket sales grew 86% YoY and the company highlighted continued aftermarket expansion (including a recent acquisition) as a strategic diversification driver. Gross profit was $10.8M with gross margin of 16.8% (up 190 bps YoY), which management attributed to favorable product mix (more conversions/retrofits) and productivity improvements. Management said productivity at manufacturing has improved ~50% over 24 months, with four fully operational lines and scalable capacity (a fifth line available if needed). Tank car retrofit work is expected to begin in H2 (initial activity in Q3, more meaningful in Q4) and the retrofit program spans two years. Reported net income was $41.6M ($1.15/sh) which included a $49.1M noncash gain from remeasurement of a warrant liability; on an adjusted basis the company reported an adjusted net loss of $0.5M ($0.04/sh). Adjusted EBITDA was $3.2M (margin 4.9%). Cash and equivalents were $52.8M; capex guidance for 2026 is $7–$10M. Management emphasized agility/shorter lead times (in some instances 9–12 weeks), improving pipeline activity and confidence in delivering stronger H2 results without significant incremental capital spend.
