Android Devices May Soon Show iMessage Reactions as Emoji
07:46pm, Friday, 19'th Nov 2021 Mac Rumors
The Google Messages app on Android devices may soon start showing iMessage reactions as emoji characters instead of text, according to some digging done by 9to5Google . In the Messages app on iOS and Mac devices, users can add a reaction like a heart, thumbs up, thumbs down, a laugh, a question mark, or an exclamation, all of which show up as annotations to an iMessage. These reactions can also be used on "green bubble" messages from Android users, but Android doesn''t interpret them correctly and it can lead to awkwardness. If you heart a message on an iPhone , for example, a fellow iPhone user will see a little heart on the message. On Android, though, when you heart a message it shows it in text: [Person] "Loved" and then the text of the message. This is true of all of the iMessages reactions, Google turns them into text in a way that looks weird, especially if Android users aren''t aware of iMessage reactions. 9to5Google looked at the code in the latest beta update to Google Messages and discovered that rather than showing iMessage reactions as text, Google Messages may soon translate them into emoji, which would be a much better solution for Android users. "Show iPhone reactions as emoji," reads a line of the code, under the "ios_reaction_classification." For now, it''s not clear exactly how this "classification" would work, but one would imagine Google Messages would spot incoming messages that start with something like "Liked" and try to match it to a previous message.

Why Apple changed its mind on Right to Repair
05:30pm, Friday, 19'th Nov 2021 Engadget
Apple does not have a good track record in terms of letting customers repair their hardware. The last decade-plus has seen Apples computers become essentially impossible for users to service or upgrade, and the iPhone has always been a locked box. Adventurous owners might follow guides from iFixit to try and do repairs themselves, but its a dangerous proposition. Remember, it was just earlier this year, when we discovered that replacing the display on an iPhone 13 would disable Face ID (something Apple eventually made an about face on). So Apples announcement earlier this week that it would start selling parts and tools directly to consumers and offer repair guides was a huge surprise, and a move immediately hailed as a victory for right-to-repair activists. One of the most visible opponents to repair access is reversing course, said Nathan Proctor , a senior Right to Repair campaign director at Public Interest Research Groups (PIRG). Apples move shows that what repair advocates have been asking for was always possible. iFixit was similarly pleased, saying that the move is exactly the right thing for Apple to be doing. Both groups caveated their statements by noting a few catches; PIRG says that Apples plans werent as comprehensive as the right-to-repair legislation being discussed in more than two dozen states, while iFixit wants to analyze the legal terms and test the program before it can say just how much credit Apple deserves.
